CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The Dartmouth women's basketball team concluded its 2022-23 season with a 64-40 loss at Harvard on Saturday afternoon.
The Big Green finish the season with a record of 2-26 (0-14), while Harvard enters the Ivy League Tournament at 16-10 (9-5).
Victoria Page,
Mekkena Boyd and
Grace Niekelski each scored eight points to lead a balanced scoring contingent. Niekelski and Boyd, along with
Emma Koch, grabbed five boards. Harvard was led by a 22-point performance from McKenzie Forbes and Elena Rodriguez's 16-rebound double-double.
A slow start on the offensive end proved costly for the Big Green, who trailed by 14 by the end of the first quarter, but played within four points or fewer of the soon-to-be Ivy Madness participants in all remaining quarters.
Two 3-pointers from Page represented the Big Green's only offense in the opening quarter. Harvard, on the other hand, shot 5-of-7 from beyond the arc to roll to a 20-6 edge by the end of the first. The Crimson had their first double-digit advantage at the 3:33 mark when Lola Mullaney connected on her first of back-to-back triples.
Dartmouth upped its offensive production in the second quarter, but Harvard was still able to extend its lead and hand the Big Green a 17-point deficit by halftime. The triple was less of a threat as Harvard knocked down one of just three attempts from 3-point land, but double-digit points in the paint from the Crimson offense hindered Dartmouth's efforts to get back in the game. Harvard had its largest lead of the first half, 33-15, after McKenzie Forbes canned the lone 3-pointer.
A pair of triples from Niekelski guided the Big Green offense in the third. Her first, which came at the 5:14 mark, brought Dartmouth within 13, but a Dartmouth run wasn't in the cards as Rodriguez answered with a layup on the ensuing possession. Harvard held its first 20-point edge after another Forbes triple in the final two minutes of the quarter.
The Big Green were back within 20 when Boyd opened the fourth-quarter scoring, but the Crimson lead continued to grow until Dartmouth eventually faced a 30-point deficit with less than four minutes remaining.
With the 2022-23 season now in the books, Dartmouth sets its sights on the 2023-24 campaign, which will welcome back each of the team's top five leading scorers.
