LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. — A three-run homer off the bat of Danny Barbero in the first was a harbinger of things to come as Siena scored early and often to defeat visiting Dartmouth on Wednesday afternoon at Connors Park by a final of 20-1. Aiden Stewart also homered and was a perfect 3-for-3 — falling just a double shy of the cycle — with four runs and six RBIs for the Saints (7-29) as the Big Green dropped to 1-28 on the season.
Siena added six runs in the second on just three hits thanks to three walks, two hit batters and an error as the Saints built up a 9-0 lead.
Dartmouth got one back in the third on back-to-back doubles by
Elliot Krewson and
Peter O'Toole, but those were two of the only four hits the Big Green could muster on this day.
Five more Siena runs crossed the plate in the fourth with Stewart's two-run triple being the key blow. The following frame, he capped a six-run outburst and all of the game's scoring with a three-run blast over the right-field fence, his fifth long ball of the year.
The game concluded after the top of the seventh due to the 10-run rule.
A total of 10 Saints contributed to the 15-hit attack and helped make a winner out of reliever Joey Laurer (1-0) who tossed a perfect fifth, fanning two along the way.
Junior
Tyler Cortland (0-1), who was making his first start and just his second appearance of the season, surrendered the three runs in the first to get stuck with the loss.
Dartmouth travels to New York City this weekend for a three-game series at Columbia. The doubleheader is scheduled for Saturday at 11:30 a.m. with the finale on Sunday at noon, but weather may force the games to be moved up a day. All three games will be streamed live on ESPN+, and live stats will be available on DartmouthSports.com, the official website of Dartmouth Athletics.
Notes: Dartmouth extended its longest losing streak in program history to 21 games … the margin of defeat matches the Big Green's second-largest since 1900 … Siena beat the Big Green for the first time since 2008 and is 3-9-1 in the series.
