HANOVER, N.H. — Sebastián Mañón of Dartmouth men's soccer will represent his nation, Dominican Republic, on an international stage this summer. Mañón will take part in the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Argentina beginning on May 20.
Mañón, a defender for the Big Green, will be a member of the first Dominican Republic side to play in a FIFA tournament. His nation punched its first-ever ticket to the U-20 World Cup after a historic run at the 2022 Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) Under-20 Championship last year.
"We are so excited for Sebastian to have the opportunity to compete in the U-20 World Cup," Bobby Clark Head Coach of Men's Soccer
Bo Oshoniyi said. "Playing against the likes of Brazil, Italy and Nigeria will give him valuable experience. We are very proud of Sebastián and are happy to have him as part of Dartmouth men's soccer."
Dominican Republic earned its bid in the 2023 U-20 World Cup after a pair of victories in the knockout stages of the CONCACAF U-20 Championship.
Los Quisqueyanos defeated El Salvador in a thrilling 5-4 contest in the round of 16 and officially earned its spot in the U-20 World Cup following a 1-0 win over Jamaica in the quarterfinals.
Mañón and his team also qualified Dominican Republic for the 2024 Summer Olympics by advancing to the championship round after defeating Guatemala in a penalty shootout in the semifinals.
Dominican Republic were placed in Group D for the U-20 World Cup and will take on Italy, Brazil and Nigeria in the group stage.
In his freshman season with the Big Green in 2022, Mañón started 11 games and made 13 appearances. His strong performances on defense helped lead Dartmouth to double its win total from 2021.
The 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup is set to take place from May 20 through June 11 in Argentina.
