STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — The Dartmouth rugby team dominated Penn State in the 2023 season opener with a 79-0 victory on Friday evening in State College, Pennsylvania. The two-time defending NIRA champions earned their 19th consecutive win, dating back to the start of the 2021 season.
The Big Green are undefeated all-time in season openers and emphatically kept that streak alive as
Simone Bautista and
Asialeata Meni scored three tries apiece to lead a high-powered Dartmouth offense. Freshmen also shined in their collegiate debuts as
Cindy Taulava,
Hehea Pulotu and
Paola Arredondo-Almeida each found the try zone.
Bautista opened the scoring before back-to-back Meni tries and
Abbey Savin conversions had the Big Green on top, 19-0. Bautista struck again, followed by
Nicole Ihensekhien, and Taulava recorded her first career try to round out the first half onslaught.
Pulotu earned her first career score to open the second half before Meni completed the hat trick. Bautista would do the same after additional tries from Taulava,
Reign Jefferson and Arredondo Almeida, who accounted for two of the match's final three scores.
With the 79-point performance, Dartmouth has scored 259 points over its last three regular season matches. The 2022 squad capped the regular season with 95-point and 85-point performances against Princeton and Brown, respectively.
Following the win over Penn State, a member of the Collegiate Rugby Association of America, the Big Green open NIRA play on Saturday, Sept. 9 at Army West Point. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
