NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Dartmouth women's soccer team opened Ivy League play with a 1-0 victory over Yale on Saturday in a rain-soaked contest at Reese Stadium.
Hannah Curtin scored in the 71
st minute to lift Dartmouth (6-0-3, 1-0-0) to its first conference win of the year. Yale falls to 4-2-2, 0-1-0.
Â
"It was a hard-fought battle. It's a huge result for us to get a win on the road against a really good side in Yale," said Stacy and Nick Branca Family Head Coach of Women's Soccer
Taylor Schram. "Credit to them for putting us under a ton of pressure. We haven't faced that number of shots yet this season. Our backline and
Emily Hardy played unbelievable again."
Â
The lone goal of the match came midway through the second half as Curtin tallied her first goal of the year.
Mary Lundregan played the ball down the left wing, and a fortunate deflection off a 50-50 ball between
Audrey Marin and a Yale defender sent the ball further down the wing towards the endline. Marin won the race to the ball and played a low-driven cross into the box. Curtin made the near post run and hit a left-footed strike into the near post to put the Big Green ahead, 1-0.
"Looking back at it, I think I just really wanted to get a foot on it," said Curtin. "It was a great cross from Audrey and it was a really great feeling to score here."
Â
Yale's best chance of the night came late in the first half when Meredith Phillips was sent through on goal on a breakaway. As she got into the box, she was met by
Emily Hardy, who came quick off the line to make the 1v1 save. The Bulldogs claimed possession off the rebound, and Phillips redirected a pass towards goal, but it was cleared off the goal line by
Ellie Davidson.
Â
The Bulldogs got several shots off in the final few minutes, but none of them were on target.
Â
Hardy made a season-high seven saves to earn her sixth clean sheet of the season.
Â
Yale held a 5-2 edge in corners and a 7-6 edge in shots on goal.
Â
Schram finished with, "It feels great to be going home with three points under our belt."
Â
Dartmouth returns to Burnham Field next Saturday for an Ivy League contest against Cornell. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. and the game will be available to stream nationally on ESPN+ and internationally on Stretch Internet. Single-game tickets are available for purchase through the Dartmouth Athletics Ticket Office.
