HANOVER, N.H. – The Big Green came from behind twice against the Brown Bears Saturday at Thompson Arena, playing 65 minutes to secure a 3-3 tie on Senior Day. With the tie the Big Green move to 6-18-4 overall and 3-14-4 against ECAC Hockey opponents, whereas the Bears move to 11-13-4 and 7-10-4 in the conference.
Brown opened the scoring Saturday night just under seven minutes into the game. The Bears were attacking and despite the Big Green looking like they were in control, the puck deflected off the Big Green defense and behind goaltender Hann Humphreys to give the Bears the 1-0 lead.
With just under a minute left in the period, Cally Dixon made her first fantastic play of the night, tipping an Annie King shot from the point by the goaltender to tie the game.
Both the Bears and the Big Green remained off the scoreboard for most of the second period, but a shot from the point took a funky bounce and Brown's Maya Mangiafico found herself positioned in the crease to tap home the loose puck with under a minute remaining in the period.
Brown would add an insurance goal early in the third period to double their lead, but the Big Green were able to respond. Jenna Donohue won a board battle to get the puck to Dixon who found Laura Fuoco alone in front. Fuoco put the puck top shelf to beat Brown's goaltender Kaley Doyle and cut the Bears' lead in half.
The game remained 3-2 in Brown's favor, but Dartmouth continued to battle, posting 12 shots in the third period. With only two and a half minutes to play, Dixon made her third incredible play of the night, redirecting the puck with her skate in center ice to Vanessa Stamper who carried up the ice and into the zone. Stamper took the shot and the rebound landed perfectly for Tiffany Hill who potted the goal to tie the game and force overtime.
"My linemate [Vanessa Stamper] just got the puck on the net," Hill said about her goal. "I went really hard, saw the rebound there and whacked it home."
The Big Green played the first few minutes of the overtime period short-handed but were able to kill the penalty. The remainder of the overtime period was then played four-on-four, and despite two chances late, the Big Green were not able to capitalize, coming away with the 3-3 tie.
Humphreys played strongly in net again, stopping 26 of the 29 shots faced and keeping the Big Green in the game.
Head Coach Liz Keady Norton said effort was what allowed the team to stay in the game.
"I was really proud of their effort all over the ice, I feel we played as a five-person unit, we were first touch a bunch and there was no back down and that's something we can be proud of," Keady Norton said.
Hill agreed with her head coach and reflected on her final regular season home game at Thompson Arena, saying "It's great that we stayed close with them and played right to the end. It's pretty sad its already over but it's been a great time."
The Big Green will travel to Clarkson and St. Lawrence next weekend to play their final two games of the regular season, and according to Hill, hope to continue the momentum and battle created in this game.
Friday's matchup with Clarkson is scheduled for 6 p.m. whereas Saturday's matchup with St. Lawrence will be a 3 p.m. start. Both games will be available to stream on ESPN+ and Stretch Internet or can be followed via live stats on DartmouthSports.com.
