HAMDEN, Conn. – Luke Haymes scored his 11
th goal of the season, but the Dartmouth men's hockey team fell to No. 7 Quinnipiac, 5-1, in ECAC Hockey play on Saturday evening at the M&T Bank Arena.
Dartmouth falls to 6-9-7, 4-6-5 while Quinnipiac improves to 19-6-2, 12-2-1.
"I think we're at the point of the year where we'll be disappointed if we don't get points," said
Reid Cashman, the Koenig Family Head Coach of Dartmouth Men's Hockey. "The penalty kill wasn't where it needs to be, and the margin of error gets really thin as you play better teams and as you get towards the end of the season. We'll learn from it and we'll grow from it."
The Big Green goal came midway through the third period. On the power play, Dartmouth pulled
Cooper Black to go with an extra attacker to try and chip away at the deficit. It worked out for the Big Green as the two-man advantage paid off.
CJ Foley's shot from the point was redirected in front of goal by Haymes and into the back of the net.
Quinnipiac had jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period before extending the lead to four late in the second. The Bobcats scored a fifth goal late in the third. Collin Graf, Jacob Quillan and Travis Treloar each finished with one goal and two assists for Quinnipiac.
The Big Green held the edge in faceoffs, 40-36, with Haymes leading the way with 14 faceoff wins. The Dartmouth defense blocked 18 shots, led by
CJ Foley,
Matt Fusco and
Steven Townley, who each had three.
Dartmouth is on the road next Friday evening for an ECAC Hockey and Ivy League game against Harvard. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be available to stream on ESPN+ and Stretch Internet.
Notes: Quinnipiac scored three power play goals, the most that Dartmouth has given up in a single game this season.
