CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The women's hockey team matched up with the Harvard Crimson Saturday, posting identical records and looking for important points in the ECAC Hockey standings. The Big Green were dominant on special teams, scoring a power-play goal and killing two penalties to defeat the Crimson 2-0 at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center. With the win, this is the first time the Big Green have swept a regular season series with the Crimson since the 2003-2004 season.
With the win, the Big Green move to 6-17-2 overall and 3-13-2 in conference play. The Crimson fall to 5-18-2 and 3-14-1 in ECAC Hockey.
The Big Green and Crimson played an even first period at full-strength. Hann Humphreys started in net for the Big Green and made 10 saves through the first 20 minutes of play.
In the second period, the Big Green found themselves shorthanded twice in the first half of the period, successfully killing both penalties to keep the game tied.
Less than a minute after their second penalty of the period, the Big Green drew a call of their own. Only 58 seconds elapsed in the Big Green power play before Izee Powell's shot from the point found its way to the back of the net to give the Big Green the 1-0 lead.
Humphreys continued to play strongly in net, collecting 11 saves in the second period.
Following a poor special teams showing last weekend, Assistant Coach Max Gavin said the team's special teams is what made the difference today.
"The power play came up big when they had their opportunity, and it was great for the [penalty kill] to lock it down there too," Gavin said. "It got us the momentum we needed headed into the third period to lock it down."
The Big Green played another dominant period and despite not being able to convert on their second power play, still found success when the Crimson pulled their goaltender. Cally Dixon was able to double Dartmouth's lead, scoring the empty net goal to secure the win with less than a minute remaining in the game.
Humphreys made 34 saves in the shutout victory and not only praised the team with them on the ice, but their rugby teammates in the stands.
"I think it shows a lot about what this school can be to have almost the entire rugby team that's here on campus to drive two hours to watch and then be the loudest people in the rink," Humphreys said. "They made it feel like we were playing in front of a home crowd. It helped give the hockey team a lot of energy too."
Both Gavin and Humphreys say this win was important in building momentum and according to Humphreys, helps the team "realize what we are capable of."
The Big Green will return home next weekend for their final regular season games at Thompson Arena, looking to build off their performance against the Crimson. They will host Yale on Friday at 6 p.m. to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day and host post-game autographs. The Big Green will welcome Brown on Saturday for a 3 p.m. puck drop, also honoring the team's seniors.
