AVON, Conn. — Stony Brook ended the first half with three straight goals to take an 11-8 lead, then held off multiple second-half comeback attempts by the Dartmouth men's lacrosse team, as the Big Green fell 15-12 on Tuesday night at Avon Old Farms. Junior
Colin McGill led the offense with four goals and an assist, good for his second straight hat trick, third of the season and 12th of his career.
Â
With the loss, Dartmouth falls to 2-3 on the season. Stony Brook, who was in the CAA Championship Game last season, improves to 3-3.
Â
Along with McGill's five points, senior
Peter Lapina tied a career high with four points via two goals and two assists. Senior
Henry Bonnie had a goal and career-high two assists. Sophomore
Cameron Brown posted two goals and an assist for his third multi-goal game of the season.
Â
The Big Green jumped out to a 3-2 lead after two McGill goals in 42 seconds. After three consecutive Stony Brook goals, Dartmouth responded with three straight of its own, off the stick of Brown (his second man-up goal of the first quarter), Lapina and sophomore
Emmett Paradine, which made the score 6-5 Big Green early in the second quarter.
Â
The sides went back and forth through the remainder of the stanza. After the Seawolves retook the lead, Dartmouth twice pulled even — at seven then eight — after goals from Bonnie and McGill. However, Stony Brook's Dylan Pallonetti scored twice then assisted on another to put the Seawolves in front 11-8 at the half.
Â
The first two third-quarter goals came from McGill and Lapina to pull Dartmouth within 11-10 with 6:54 on the clock, but two Stony Brook goals ended that momentum and made the score 13-10 after 45 minutes of play.
Â
The sides alternated fourth-quarter goals, with Big Green goals coming from senior
Nate Davis and Paradine, as they couldn't get any closer than two the rest of the way.
Â
For the game, the Big Green held a 46-43 edge in shots and 38-36 advantage in groundballs. Dartmouth was 2-for-5 on the extra man to Stony Brook's 2-for-7. The Big Green had 18 turnovers to the Seawolves' 14. First-year
Ryan Williamson made three saves in the first 27:09 before being replaced by junior
Mason Morel, who stopped seven, allowing just four goals, over the final 32:51.
Â
Fifth-year
Mitchell Myers won 14-of-28 faceoffs with a season-high 10 groundballs, while junior
Vincent Gandolfo won 2-of-3 with a groundball.
