WORCESTER, Mass. — The Dartmouth men's lacrosse team scored the game's first six goals and wouldn't look back, on the way to defeating Holy Cross 14-4 on Saturday afternoon.
Colin McGill led the offense with game highs in goals (4) and points (5) while five other Big Green players added multiple points. Goalkeeper
Mason Morel made 15 saves, allowing just three goals, in a stellar performance.
"Really pleased with our game today," said Dartmouth head coach
Sean Kirwan. "Our guys were focused in the quick turnaround after a tough game on Tuesday and were ready to compete right from the opening whistle. I thought our defense had an outstanding game playing our style and it certainly helps when you have a performance in goal like we did with
Mason Morel. We talked the last couple of days about getting back to playing Dartmouth Lacrosse and we definitely showcased that today."
Along with McGill's five points,
Thomas Power had four points via two goals and two assists.
Hopper Zappitello recorded a goal and two assists while
Jackson Monte scored twice.
Brandon Ventarola and
Alex Jessey each tallied a goal and assist.
The Big Green allowed just four goals Saturday, marking the fewest they've allowed in a game since also giving up four on Mar. 2, 2019 at Wagner.
Jack Mulholland caused three turnovers while
Thomas Goguen recorded three groundballs and a caused turnover.
Six different goal scorers accounted for a 6-0 Dartmouth lead early in the second quarter. McGill, Power and Zappitello each recorded a goal and assist in that stretch.
Holy Cross scored its first goal at 11:21 of the second quarter, but the Big Green answered with the next two — with Monte scoring his first at 3:27 of the second before Stahl opened the second-half scoring just 2:29 into the third quarter. That marked Stahl's first goal with the Big Green, with it coming against his former team.
Holy Cross scored consecutive goals at 8:14 and 7:11 of the third to pull within 8-3, but the Big Green erased any doubt with another 6-0 run to take a 14-3 lead. In that stretch, McGill had a natural hat trick, via a man-up goal then two early fourth-quarter scores.
Final shots were tied at 40, with the Big Green holding a 29-27 edge in groundballs. Dartmouth was 2-for-4 on the extra man, while Holy Cross finished 2-for-5. Morel's 15 saves came in 51:45, before being replaced by
Ryan Williamson. The Crusaders' John Long made 11 stops.
Vincent Gandolfo won 4-of-8 faceoffs in his most action of the young season.
The Big Green now return home for the next four games, beginning with two next weekend. They will welcome Vermont on Friday (4 p.m.) and Siena on Sunday (1 p.m.).
