HANOVER, N.H. — Trailing 8-7 in the third quarter, the Dartmouth men's lacrosse team scored seven of the game's final eight goals to pull away for an impressive 14-9 win over intrastate rival Vermont on Friday afternoon at Scully-Fahey Field. The win marked the Big Green's second in a row and third of the season as they improved to 3-1 on the young campaign. Vermont fell to 2-2.
"I don't think the score is indicative of how tight that game was," said Dartmouth head coach
Sean Kirwan. "Sure we got a couple at the end, but credit to Vermont. They're a really impressive group, really dangerous in transition. They got a couple on us in the first half, so I'm really proud of our guys to rally at halftime and most importantly, rally in the fourth quarter to really step up and make the plays that we needed to in order to come out on top."
Offensively,
Thomas Power continued his strong start to the season, and Dartmouth career, with five points via four goals and one assist.
Emmett Paradine scored three times for his third-career hat trick.
Hopper Zappitello had two goals and two assists while
Colin McGill recorded two goals and an assist.
Tyler Juhlin scored a goal and dished two assists.
Defensively,
Griffin O'Neil and
Jack Mulholland each caused three turnovers.
Spencer Reagan impressed facing off, winning 14-of-26 with eight groundballs. The effort came against a pair of Vermont Catamounts, including Henry Dodge, who entered the day as the nation's leader at faceoff percentage at 76.7 percent.
"
Spencer Reagan was tremendous," said Kirwan. "Henry Dodge is one of the best in the country, so for Spencer to go and really battle at the X and win his fair share just gave us a ton of confidence that this was a game we could balance possessions and really go to work."
A back-and-forth start saw neither team lead by more than two in the first quarter, which came three times for the Big Green at 2-0, 3-1 and 4-2. The first quarter saw four Dartmouth goals from four different goal scorers.
After Power scored his second early in the second quarter, the Catamounts went on to score four straight — all in the span of 5:29 — to take a 6-5 advantage. UVM took a 7-6 lead into halftime.
Dartmouth began the second half with a highlight-reel goal, with
Mason Morel making a save then finding McGill downfield, who fed
Ben DiGiovanni in front of the goal for the 7-7 equalizer at 8:57 of the third quarter. Vermont answered just over a minute later, but that's when the Big Green took over. Goals from Paradine,
Brandon Ventarola, then Paradine again made the score 10-8 midway through the fourth.
A Tristan Whitaker goal pulled Vermont within 10-9, but Paradine's third goal in the span of just over a quarter made it 11-9. The Big Green tacked on three more goals — one from McGill and two from Power — for the 14-9 final.
Final shots were 54-34 in favor of Dartmouth while the Catamounts had 22 turnovers to 14 for the Big Green. UVM held a 43-39 edge in groundballs. Both teams were 1-for-3 on the extra man. Morel finished with eight saves for Dartmouth, with Vermont's Ryan Daly recording 18 for the Catamounts.
The Big Green return to action against Siena, in a game now scheduled for Monday at 4 p.m. (pushed from Sunday at 1 p.m.).
