Liz Spence was one of six players who started every game last spring. She tied for second on the team with 20 caused turnovers including four against Boston University. A solid decision maker and calming presence on the field, she collected 22 ground balls as a junior. After the season she was named a winner of the inaugural Dartmouth Class of 1980 Award. Given to one student-athlete from both the men's and women's lacrosse teams, the award goes to the man and woman who "best represent themselves, their team, the College and the community through their academics, athletics and community involvement." Spence holds membership in Dartmouth's Green Key Society, Student Athletic Advisory Committee and Dartmouth Outing Club. In the fall of 2006, she worked for the World Wildlife Fund in Valdivia, Chile, translating publications from Spanish to English and working with indigenous communities on sustainable resources. When not on the job, she hiked and fished in both Chile and Argentina. As a sophomore, Spence mentored a fifth-grade student at nearby Thetford (Vt.) Elementary School. During the summer before her senior year she taught natural sciences and forest ecology at the Keystone (Colo.) Science School to students ages 8-13. During her sophomore season she appeared in 18 of 20 games, including the national championship contest against Northwestern. She started the season's first 11 games and went on to finish the year with 20 ground balls. As a freshman she played in seven contests, including the NCAA semifinal against eventual champion Northwestern. Liz played three sports at Concord Academy and was the only female for four years on the golf team. Basketball and lacrosse were her other sports. Twice elected captain of the lacrosse team her junior and senior years, she led Concord Academy to the EIL Pool B tournament as a senior. Liz was named first team All-America in 2003, EIL All-Star in 2002 and 2003 and NEPSWLA defensive All-Star for three years.
Elizabeth is majoring in environmental studies.
WHAT THE COACHES SAY ABOUT ELIZABETH:
“Liz is a very solid lefty-defender. She's a smart and reliable performer who gained valuable experience last year. She's another good communicator who is poised for a break-out year.”
