Throughout the summer, DartmouthSports.com will be focusing on members of the Class of 2020 who are currently in their "Sophomore Summers."
This installment features Ian Sistare of the men's basketball team. A New Hampshire native, Sistare has played in every game as a reserve in his first two seasons providing a gritty influx of energy while racking up the hustle points. It is no surprise that he has been named the recipient of the team's John DiIorio '56 Award for hustle, drive and determination. His game generally rises to the level of competition as his perfect shooting performances from 3-point range against Notre Dame (4-of-4) and Boston College (3-of-3) attest.
DartmouthSports.com: What have you been doing during your sophomore summer?
Ian Sistare: During sophomore summer I have been lifting with my teammates every day at 8 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday we lift in Floren, and then Tuesday and Thursday we do conditioning and speed work. It's a nice way to start each day with a sense of accomplishment. Then I have my classes throughout the day. Afternoons are relatively free. Also, I am in the DRIVE leadership program. That is twice a week, Tuesday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and Thursday from 4:30-7:30. So, I'm having a great summer and staying busy.
DS: What is your favorite place on campus?
IS: My favorite place at Dartmouth is Collis. I love how you can get your food there and socialize with friends while eating, or maybe watching some TV. Also, their food is really good so that helps a lot.
DS: What was it in the recruiting process that sold you on Dartmouth?
IS: The thing that really sold me on Dartmouth during the recruiting process was the family-like environment. I could definitely feel a sense of community. The students, teachers and faculty really seem to care about each other, which is so awesome to be a part of. I felt like I could add something to this community, and I was familiar with the weather and small-town environment because I am from New Hampshire.
DS: If you could play another sport at Dartmouth, what would it be and why?
IS: If I could play another sport at Dartmouth I would love to play football. I have had the opportunity to get to know a bunch of the football players and I love their approach to their sport. They really seem to have a hard-working and dedicated approach and attitude toward getting better, which is a great team culture to have. I think I would fit in well with their team and culture.
DS: Outside of sports, what are you most passionate about?
IS: Outside of sports, I love being outside and enjoying the weather during the summer especially. I enjoy golfing, swimming and being outside with friends. I also enjoy being social and getting to know a lot of different people around campus. There are so many cool and amazing people here that it's so great to get to know as many people as possible.
DS: Who would play you in the movie of your life?
IS: If I were to pick someone to play me in my movie of life I would pick Jake Gyllenhaal. I love all of his movies and I think he's a great actor.
DS: How is Hanover different or similar to where you grew up?
IS: Hanover is very similar to where I grew up. I grew up in Dublin, New Hampshire, which is 85 miles south of Hanover. It's a small town of about 1,500 people. It has a great sense of community, which is very similar to Hanover. I am really proud to be from Dublin because that is where my family is from and I have so many great memories of such fun times with family and friends there.
DS: Do you have a nickname on your team? Who gave it to you and why?
IS: I do have a nickname of my team, it's Hogger. I know that sounds kinda weird, but it's the mascot of my high school. I went to Northfield Mount Hermon and we were the Hoggers (haha). Brutal name kinda, but it stuck on my team and my teammates have called me that ever since they found out about it.
DS: What would be your best advice to your 15-year-old self?
IS: My best advice to my 15-year-old self would be this: Make sure you live your life without any regrets. Make sure to try new things and do the things that make you feel uncomfortable. Give every opportunity the best effort you can possibly give. After that, the results will take care of themselves.
