HANOVER, N.H. -- -

Sophomore Casey Hazel scored three goals and four other Big Green players potted two apiece as the Dartmouth women's lacrosse team opened Ivy League action with a 13-9 victory over Yale.

Hazel had two goals in a critical second-half stretch, and Dartmouth improved to 3-2 overall.

Holding a 6-5 halftime lead, the Big Green scored five of the first six goals of the second half for an 11-6 advantage with 19 minutes to play. Sophomore Kristen Zimmer came out of the locker room with goals at 29:44 and 28:07, and senior Kate Killen added another on a free position shot.

After Yale's Katherine Sargent scored with 24:31 on the clock, Hazel netted back-to-back markers to give the Big Green breathing room.

"We needed that game," said Dartmouth head coach Amy Patton, who spent most of the contest in the Scully-Fahey Field press box suffering from pneumonia. "We wanted to start league play off with a win, and Yale is a very good team.

"I thought our fast break was a key and defensively, we did a good job on Miles Whitman," added Patton.

Yale's leading scorer, Whitman had four goals and two assists on the afternoon.

Dartmouth came into the game ranked 11th in the nation, while the Bulldogs were 15th.

Also scoring twice for the Big Green were senior Lana Smith, senior Molly Jenkins and sophomore Annie Leibovitz.

Zimmer also had a pair of assists for Dartmouth who returns to action on Sunday, hosting Columbia at 1 p.m.

In the nets, Dartmouth sophomore Devon Wills made 13 saves and Yale's Lonnie Sarnell made 10.
