BOSTON - Despite grabbing an early lead, the Dartmouth women's soccer team had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Boston University on Wednesday afternoon at Nickerson Field. The Big Green, which has been receiving votes in several national polls and is ranked fourth in the Northeast, moves to 7-3-1 on the season, while the Terriers are now 8-4-4 on the season.
"It was a very competitive game," said Big Green head coach Angie Hind, "and I was pleased with the amount of good shots on goal that we had."
Dartmouth jumped on the board in the seventh minute when junior Melissa Matulich hit a cross from the right side to just outside the penalty area. Senior co-captain Jennie Tonneson gathered in the feed and fired a high hard shot from 25 yards out that beat Terrier keeper Christian Reuter and gave the Big Green a 1-0 lead.
BU had a chance to even the match in the opening 45 minutes when Melissa Shulman took a shot that hit the crossbar. The ball bounced straight down but was cleared by the Big Green defense, and Dartmouth took its one-goal lead into the halftime locker room.
The Terriers finally broke through in the 70th minute. Shulman broke free on the right wing and fired a pass to a streaking Meghann Cook who booted home the tying goal to the far post.
Neither team could score the rest of regulation, and Dartmouth had two great chances by junior Emily Tracy in overtime, but the game ended in a draw. Dartmouth outshot the Terriers, 15-9, but BU had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
