No. 3 Dartmouth Women's Lacrosse Drops Double Overtime Decision

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- On Monday, the third-ranked Dartmouth women's lacrosse team opened the 2006 season with a heartbreaking, double overtime loss to Syracuse, 11-10.
For the Orange, Caitlyn Dragon scored with one second remaining in double overtime, pushing No. 13 Syracuse to victory in the Carrier Dome.

Whitney Douthett (Newtown, Pa.) scored two of her game-high four goals in the first half, but Syracuse held a 5-3 lead at halftime, as Megan Mosenson scored all three of hers in the first 30 minutes.
After the break, the Orange (2-0) pushed the lead to 7-3 before Dartmouth answered with three goals in a four-minute stretch. Junior
Sarah Szefi (Pittsburgh, Pa.), senior
Kristen Zimmer (Alexandria, Va.) and Douthett got the Big Green within one, 7-6, with 18:41 remaining in regulation.
Syracuse's Gaddy Fortune and Dragon built the lead back up to 9-6, before Dartmouth closed with a flurry. Senior
Casey Hazel (Reisterstown, Md.) scored at 10:10, followed by two goals by Szefi. Szefi's third of the afternoon tied the game, 9-9, with two seconds left in regulation.
In the first overtime, Kathryn Rowan scored for the Orange for a 10-9 lead. With just 17 seconds left in the second overtime, Douthett potted an unassisted goal for the tie, but Dragon answered with her third of the game with one tick left.
In the nets, Dartmouth's
Devon Wills (Denver, Colo.) had eight saves. The Big Green had won four previous outings against the Orange, including last year's 9-8 decision in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
For Dartmouth, the result was the first season-opening loss since the Big Green faced No. 1 Maryland at the start of 1999.
Dartmouth continues the season on Saturday, March 4 with a 1 p.m. road game against the unranked University of New Hampshire Wildcats.
