HANOVER, N.H. -- Junior Sarah Szefi (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and sophomore Kristen Barry (Duxbury, Mass.) each scored four goals as the ninth-ranked Dartmouth women's lacrosse team downed Massachusetts, 16-7, on Wednesday.
It was the home opener for the Big Green who improved to 2-1 on the year. The Minutewomen went to 1-3 on the year, despite a pair of goals by Kathleen Typadis.
The Big Green raced out to an 8-0 lead in the first 7:10 of the game and went into halftime with a 12-2 advantage. Szefi scored all four of her goals in the first half.
"It was a nice way to open on our home field," said Dartmouth Coach Amy Patton. "That was our focus and it was about really setting a tone for us. There's something special about playing here, and this team loves it. We said we had to come out here today and set the tone from the start."
The Big Green did just that, scoring 56 seconds into the game and piling up a 5-0 lead with 4:45 elapsed.
Junior Margo Duke (Englewood, Colo.) had a strong showing, too, collecting her three goals in the opening half blitz.
Although she didn't score, junior attacker Whitney Douthett (Newtown, Pa.) had five assists, while senior Casey Hazel (Reisterstown, Md.) and junior Jen Pittman (New Canaan, Conn.) both had two goals.
Pittman (two assists) and senior Kristen Zimmer (Alexandria, Va.) had four-point afternoons. Zimmer had three assists to go along with a first-half goal.
In the nets, Dartmouth senior Devon Wills (Denver, Colo.) made eight saves. For UMass, junior Lauren McCarthy was relieved after the first 7:10 of the game. Her replacement, sophomore Krissy Anderson, had eight stops.
The Big Green now breaks for final exams for the winter term before taking on James Madison in Florida on March 18.
