DERBY, Conn. -- In its season opener on Saturday morning, the Dartmouth men's heavyweight rowing team dropped four races to Yale on the Housatonic River. The Bulldog first and second varsity crews, with three races already under their belts, were able to take advantage of the fast tailwind conditions and move away from the Big Green after the start. The freshmen races followed the same pattern.
"Our crews raced hard, but have not begun to approach their true potential for boat speed" said Buzz Congram, interim men's heavyweight coach. "I expect our crews to make steady strides in their race-readiness and speed throughout the season. Our best racing is still ahead of us."
In the varsity eight race for the Axe Trophy, Yale won in 5:37.2 to Dartmouth's 5:58.5. In the second varsity eight race, the Bulldogs finished in 5:54.0 to the Big Green's 6:06.4.
Yale also swept both of the freshman races. In the first freshman eight, Yale's crew covered the course in 5:59.5, while Dartmouth's crew finished in 6:11.0. In the second freshman eight, the Bulldogs' finished in 6:10.29 to the Big Green's 6:33.4
Dartmouth will race Boston University and Rutgers in Hanover for the Bill Cup next Saturday morning.
