Hanover, N.H.- The Dartmouth lightweight crew program was recently honored by the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges for its impressive 2007 spring season.
Dartmouth's varsity eight boat was named the EARC Most Outstanding Lightweight Crew of the Year while head coach
Steve Perry earned Lightweight Coach of the Year accolades. Both awards were selected by the EARC head coaches. Varsity eight boats from Georgetown and two-time defending national champions Cornell were also nominated for the team award.
"This is a tremendous honor and it speaks volumes about the amount of respect that our rowers have gained throughout the league to be selected by the EARC coaches as crew of the year," said Perry.
The 2007 Dartmouth lightweight varsity boat went 6-1 on the season and took home the Eastern Sprints Championship for the first time since 1994. The Big Green took fourth at the IRA National Championships and also defeated Cornell and Yale for the second-straight season in cup races. The varsity boat also traveled to England to compete in the prestigious Henley Regatta.
Now in his third season at Dartmouth, Perry has engineered an impressive turnaround, leading his varsity boat to a 10-2 record in cup races. The Big Green's Eastern Sprints win in 2007 illustrated the marked improvement from the squad's second-to-last place finish in 2005.
