HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth men's hockey team is looking for a coveted first-round bye as the Big Green hosts Cornell and Colgate in the last regular season games for all three teams. Fans are encouraged to come early on Friday to "white-out" Thompson Arena and then Saturday will be Senior Night for five Big Green players. The game on Friday will be important not only for league playoff implications but the Ivy Title is still up for grabs.
SCOUTING CORNELL
Cornell comes into Thompson Arena with a 14-9-4 overall record, 10-6-4 in the ECACHL. The Big Red sits in a tie with Quinnipiac for fourth place with 23 points. Cornell is coming off two huge wins last weekend. Quinnipiac was the first to fall to Cornell as the Big Red took a 2-0 win over the Bobcats. Princeton was the next to go down, falling, 8-4. Byron Bitz and Topher Scott lead the Big Red in scoring with 23 points apiece while Raymond Sawada has 20. Ten other Cornell players are also in double figures. Troy Davenport and Ben Scrivens have both seen considerable time in the nets with Davenport carrying most of the load. Davenport has played in 21 games with a .902 save percentage and a 2.32 GAA with an 11-4-2 record. Scrivens has played in 11 games with a .908 save percentage and a 2.21 GAA.
VS. CORNELL
This will be the 108th meeting between Cornell and Dartmouth. The Big Red holds the lead in the series, 66-39-2. Earlier this season the Big Green picked up its first win at Lynah Rink since 2002-03, defeating Cornell, 3-2. The Big Red scored two goals late in the game to give the Big Green a scare. J.T. Wyman, T.J. Galiardi and Tanner Glass each scored to give Dartmouth a three-goal lead. But Tony Romano and Raymond Sawada scored back-to-back goals at 19:08 and 19:28 to suddenly put Cornell in the game. Netminder Mike Devine was able to stop the next couple of Cornell shots. The Big Green stopped seven Cornell power plays while scoring two of its own.
SCOUTING COLGATE
Colgate has a 13-17-4 overall record coming into this weekend's games with a 7-10-3 league record. Colgate is in eighth place with 17 points with the Raiders fighting for home ice in the first round of the playoffs. Last weekend the Raiders fell twice, first to Princeton, 2-1, and then to Quinnipiac, 3-2. Tyler Burton is leading his team in scoring with 37 points while Marc Fulton and Jesse Winchester both have 34. Nick St. Pierre, Tom Riley, David McIntyre, Jason Williams and Jason Fredericks are also scoring in double figures. Netminder Mark Dekanich has played in 32 games and has a .922 save percentage and a 2.37 GAA with a 13-15-4 record. Colgate stops at Harvard on Friday night before taking on Dartmouth.
VS. COLGATE
This weekend's contest will be the 77th meeting between the two teams. The overall record has Dartmouth with a slight edge, 37-36-3 with the Big Green holding the advantage, 6-4-0, over the last 10 games. Since Bob Gaudet began coaching the Big Green, his teams have gone 12-11-2 against the Raiders. Early in the 2006-07 season the Dartmouth Big Green overpowered the Raiders for a 6-3 win in Starr Rink. Dartmouth jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after the first period as the Big Green outshot the Raiders 12-4. Dartmouth increased its lead midway through the second period before Jon Grecu potted his second of the night at 19:01 into the final stanza chasing Colgate goalie Mark Dekanich from the net. The Raiders finally got one back at 16:08, breaking up a shutout bid for Big Green netminder Mike Devine. Colgate came alive, potting another one less than two minutes later when Tom Riley beat Devine glove side. Dan Shribman gave Dartmouth a four-goal advantage. Colgate scored its final goal at the 14:00 of the final stanza.
I CAN SEE CLEARLY NOW
Dartmouth needs all four points this weekend to clinch a first-round bye. The Big Green, Cornell and Quinnipiac are all fighting for the last two spots with the Big Red and the Bobcats one point ahead of Dartmouth. The Big Green holds the tiebreaker over Quinnipiac.
IVY TITLE
Currently Yale sits in first place in the Ivy League with 13 points. Should Cornell and Dartmouth both earn wins this weekend, there would be a three-way tie but the Big Green and the Bulldogs can share the title if the Big Red gets swept. It would be the first Ivy Title for Dartmouth since 1980.
SENIOR WEEKEND
The Big Green will say goodbye to five seniors this weekend. Blueliners Ben Lovejoy, Mike Hartwick and Grant Lewis along with forwards Dan Shribman and Tanner Glass will be playing their last regular-season games in a Dartmouth uniform.
