CINCINNATI, Ohio - Neall French's seventh inning grand slam broke open a close game, leading Cincinnati to a 9-1 win over Dartmouth on Saturday at Marge Schott Stadium.
French's grand slam, the first of his career, helped the Bearcats pad a 3-1 lead. Cincinnati won its third straight game and improved to 4-5 on the season. It was the Big Green's first game of the year.
Cincinnati held a 3-0 lead through five innings. In the top of the sixth, Dartmouth freshman Nick Santomauro (North Caldwell, N.J.) chopped the ball in front of the plate for an infield single, scoring sophomore Ray Allen (Longwood, Fla.) from third. Allen had reached first on a fielder's choice, advanced to second on a throwing error and went to third on Andrew Nacario's (Carlsbad, Calif.) ground out.
Santomauro went two-for-four with one RBI. Senior righthander Jeff Wilkerson (Walnut Creek, Calif.) was the hard-luck loser, giving up one earned run in five innings of work. Coming on in relief were senior Bobby Steinsdorfer (Crystal Lake, Ill.) and freshman Miller Aldrich (College Station, Texas).
The game was delayed twice for snow.
The two schools are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Sunday, March 4, beginning at 11 am.
