HANOVER, N.H. -- The Big Green's struggle continued today in their home opener, as they dropped both games of the divisional doubleheader to Brown University. The team lost the first game 7-3, and the second 12-7.
The Bears came out ready in the first inning of Game One, as Steve Daniels led off with a triple down the right field line. The strong arm of right fielder Nick Santomauro (North Caldwell, N.J.) would prevent Daniels from scoring on an attempted sacrifice fly. Devin Thomas would come through for the Bears, after he walked and then was sent home by an RBI single from Matt Nuzzo.
Dartmouth would come right back to answer in their first plate appearances though, as three errors by the Brown defense led to Santomauro and James Wren (Granbury, Texas) crossing the plate, giving the Big Green the 2-1 lead.
Big Green starter, Russell Young (Cleburne, Texas) had a tough second inning on the mound, giving up a walk, a single and two doubles to the Bears, who capped off the frame scoring four runs to re-take the lead, 5-2.
Both teams would play to a stalemate until the top of the fifth, when again the Bears racked up three consecutive hits against Young, extending their lead to 7-2.
Dartmouth would get one run back in the seventh and final inning, but it just wasn't enough, as they dropped their third consecutive league game by the final score of 7-3. The Bears, who ended the day with six errors against them, out hit the Big Green 10-5 in Game One.

Brown's starting pitcher, James Cramphin, would make quick work of the Big Green offense early, as he held the home team scoreless until the fifth inning. But by the time Dartmouth found its way past Cramphin, they were in a hole, 6-0. Big right-hander, Jeff Wilkerson, who started the game on the hill for the Big Green, allowed six runs on 10 hits in his five innings of work.
Jack Monahan (Overland Park, Kan.) would put the first Dartmouth run on the board in the bottom of the fifth, after a sacrifice fly by Wren would produce the run. The squad wasn't about to crumble take the deficit lightly, as they amounted a solid sixth-inning comeback, putting six runs on the board and taking the lead, 7-6.
The streak of runs would begin from a double by Santomauro, followed by a hit batsmen, three consecutive singles and a double to throw six quick runs on the board under the home team name.
The unimpressed Bears would charge back in the seventh though, as Thomas blasted a solo shot over the center field wall, evening the score at seven apiece. After a walk, three straight singles and a defensive error by the Big Green, the team would find themselves in an 11-7 hole. with just three more innings left.
The Brown pitching staff worked right through the Dartmouth offense though, as they would go down 1-2-3 in the seventh and eighth innings. Brown would add one more insurance run in the top of the ninth to seal the victory and take the out right lead in the Red Rolfe Division.
With the loss, the Big Green falls 6-25-1 overall and 3-13 in the Ivy League. They will have a chance to get some league games back this weekend though, as they host rival Harvard on Saturday for Senior Day at Red Rolfe Field. That action will begin at 1:00 p.m.
