HANOVER, NH – Damon Wright collected four hits on the afternoon and Ray Allen knocked in a season high three runs in game two as Dartmouth split their doubleheader today with Harvard, losing game one 4-0 before winning 9-6 in the night cap.
The Crimson (16-17, 11-7 Ivy) took game one of the afternoon 4-0 in a briskly played one hour and twenty minute contest. Freshman right hander Max Perlman (5-1) allowed just three hits and picking up the victory.
Harvard pushed across a pair of runs in the second inning to take an early lead. With one out, Matt Rogers and Tom Stack-Babich collected back to back hits, the last of which was a double down the left field line. Shortstop Jeff Stoeckel's ground out plated Rogers before Andrew Casey lined a 2-2 offering to centerfield for the second run of the inning.
Big Green starter Chase Carpenter was saddled with the hard luck loss, as the junior scattered eight hits and fanned four in his seven inning, complete game effort. He flirted with trouble in the third inning before he set down Andrew Prince and retired Rogers on a strikeout with runners on first and second base with just one out to hold the Crimson to their 2-0 lead.
But the Harvard lead was extended in the fourth, when third baseman Steffan Wilson hit his third homerun of the season, pushing the Crimson advantage to 4-0.
While the Big Green bats were silenced in game one, they came alive in the nightcap, as they responded with eleven hits on their way to a 9-6 victory.
Dartmouth jumped on Harvard starter Brad Unger (3-2) from the start of the game, posting four early runs while sending nine batters to the plate in the first inning. Damon Wright singled with two outs and Nick Santomauro followed up with a double into the right centerfield gap. Ray Allen singled sharply up the middle on Unger's first offering to plate a pair of runs and Jack Monahan finished the scoring with a run scoring single of his own.
The teams traded runs in the second frame before Dartmouth put up three runs in the third to push their score board advantage to 7-1, all of which proved too much for Harvard to overcome on the afternoon. First baseman Michael Pagliarulo took an 0-2 offering from Unger into the right centerfield gap for a lead off double. Monahan would move him to third on a sacrifice bunt, but Unger got the second out of the inning on a fly ball. Erik Bell would reach base on a hit by pitch to put runners at first and third. James Wren and Wright collected back to back walks, the last of which chased Unger from the game. Santomauro then greeted reliever Jake Burton with a sharp single to tally the third run of the inning and conclude the scoring.
The nine runs were much to the delight of freshman Robert Young (6.0 IP, 8 hits, 4 SO), as the southpaw allowed eight hits in collecting his first collegiate victory. A pair of relievers, Bobby Steinsdoerfer and Kyle Zeis, would pitch the final three innings of the victory, allowing just three hits while fanning four.
Harvard tried to chip away at the Big Green lead, as they pushed across one run in the fourth and three more in the seventh and eventually bringing the tying run to the plate in the eighth. Stoeckel reached base to open the inning and Chris Rouches coaxed a walk, bringing the tying run to the plate with two outs. But Zeis (2 IP, 2 hits, 3 SO), who collected his second save of the season, silenced the threat by striking out centerfielder Matt Vance.
In the victory for Dartmouth, five different players had at least two hits, with senior Andrew Nacario picking up a season high three singles. Damon Wright, Nick Santomauro, and Ray Allen, who had a season high three RBI's, each added two hits in the victory.
Dartmouth returns to action tomorrow in Cambridge, when they conclude Ivy League action with a pair of games against Harvard. First pitch is set for 1:00pm.
