HANOVER, N.H. -- In their final Ivy League games of the season, the Big Green baseball team traveled down to Cambridge, Mass., to take one game from the Harvard Crimson. The squad won the first game 2-1, but dropped the second, 7-6. Dartmouth ends its Ivy season with a 5-15 record.
The Big Green were out hit 10-4 in the day's opening game, but their scoring in the first and last innings lifted the squad past Harvard by the score of 2-1.
Junior Damon Wright (Dallas, Texas) continued his hot streak from yesterday, as he singled into right field in his first at bat, which scored Erik Bell (Sierra Madre, Calif.), who led off the inning with a single of his own.
Defensively, the battle on the hill pinned Harvards Shawn Haviland against the Big Green's senior Jeff Wilkerson (Walnut Creek, Calif.). Both got solid help from their other eight fielders, keeping it a 1-0 game all the way to the sixth inning.
In the top of the inning it was Wright, again, who drove home the game-winning run, after he hit a deep sacrifice fly to right field that scored Bell, who reached base after being walked in the second at bat of the inning. Wright's two RBI's moves him to 19 on the year, which is good for second on the team just behind Nick Santomauro (North Caldwell, N.J.) who has 21.
The Crimson threatened in the bottom of the sixth when Andrew Casey recorded his second hit of the day, which brought home Jon Roberts, who was in as a pinch runner. That run would be the only tally the Crimson would get in the seven-inning game, as the Big Green win their second game in a row 2-1.
Wilkerson threw a complete seven-inning game, giving up only one run on 10 hits. He also struck out three.
For Game Two, the combination of Bell and Wright stayed hot. Bell led of the game with a single through the left side of the infield, and then Wright earned a walk to put two early runners on base for the Big Green. Santomauro and Raymond Allen (Longwood, Fla.) followed up with back-to-back singles of their own, bringing in two runs and giving Dartmouth the quick, 2-0, lead.
Harvard's Tom Stack-Babich tied things back up in his first at bat of the game, when he doubled to left center, scoring Matt Vance and Matt Rogers. The Crimson continued to pressure Dartmouth, scoring one run in the next three consecutive innings.
But the Big Green kept up with the pace of the game, scoring a run of their own in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Andrew Nacario (Carlsbad, Calif.) scored the lone run in the third on a wild pitch, while Santomauro and James Wren (Granbury, Texas) hit RBI-singles in the fourth and fifth to tie the game up at five apiece at the end of five.
The Crimson re-took the lead in the bottom of the sixth when Chris Rouches scored after leading off with a single to the outfield. Vance crossed the plate again the the sixth on an error by Michael Pagliarulo (Winchester, Mass.) making it a 7-5 game in favor of Harvard.
Dartmouth would attempt the comeback in the ninth inning as Jack Monahan (Overland Park, Kan.) led off with a double down the right field line. Wright would send Monahan home with his second hit of the game, but that would be all they could get, as the Big Green dropped Game Two, 7-6.
The Big Green, who still have two non-league games remaining on their schedule, end their Ivy season with a 5-15 record. They will host the University of Hartford on Tuesday in their final home game of the year. First pitch is scheduled 3:00 p.m.
