BRADENTON, Fla.
- A 13-hit attack and an outstanding pitching performance highlighted Dartmouth's 12-2 victory over Central
Connecticut State
in game one while a late charge left the Big Green empty handed in a 14-9 loss
to Ohio State in day two of the team's spring
trip.
On the front end of the doubleheader, five runs in each of
the first and ninth innings would be more than enough for Dartmouth to pick up its third victory of the
season.
The exploits started early in the game as the team put up
five quick runs. Sophomore Nick Santomauro (North Caldwell,
N.J.) blasted his first homerun on the young
season into the left centerfield gap while sophomore Brett Gardner (Bellevue, Wash.) and junior
Raymond Allen (Longwood, Fla.) each had run scoring singles to
highlight the inning. Two more runs were
pushed across in the third inning when with two outs, Michael Pagliarulo (Winchester, Mass.)
clubbed his first round tripper of the season.
At that point, Dartmouth
had eight of its 13 hits on the afternoon, with four coming for extra bases.
That run support would be much to the delight of Big Green
hurler sophomore Robert Young (Cleburne,
Texas) (8 IP, 6 hits, 0 BB's, 9
SO). Young was masterful in his eight innings of work, facing only three batters
over the minimum through the first five innings. He would yield his only run in the sixth
frame, as Kyle Zarotney's two out triple would plate Casey Walko, who opened
the inning with a double.
Looking to pad their 7-1 lead in the ninth, Dartmouth added five runs to put the game out
of reach. Santomauro (3 hits, 3 RBI's)
tripled to the right center gap, driving in junior Johnathon Santopadre
(Vacaville, Calif.) before freshman Jeff Onstott (Houston, Texas) and
Pagliarulo added run scoring singles of their own.
In the victory, all but one starter had one hit off of five
different Central Connecticut (2-6) pitchers,
with multi hit games coming off the bats of Santomauro, Gardner, and
Pagliarulo.
In game two, Ohio State's Ryan Meade collected four hits and
left fielder Tony Kennedy would drive in three runs to pace the Buckeye's to a
14-9 victory over the Big Green.
Kennedy got Ohio
State off to a quick
start with a solo homerun to lead off the game to give the Buckeye's an early
1-0 advantage. Three batters later,
Meade would plate one of his three runs of the day with a sharp single to
centerfield.
Ohio State pitcher J.B. Shuck (5 IP, 4 hits, 4 ER, 7 SO)
would give Dartmouth
fits early, allowing no hits and striking out four through the first four
innings of work. But Dartmouth rallied in the fifth, scoring three
runs on just two hits. Senior Erik Bell broke
up the no hitter to lead off the frame and Santamauro coaxed a walk to give Dartmouth their first
real scoring opportunity of the game. Gardner,
who had three hits in the two games today, knocked in his third run of the
season with a single to left field before Onstott scored the last of the three
runs on a ground out.
But as quickly as Dartmouth
narrowed the lead to 6-3, Ohio
State rallied for six
runs in the fifth to ultimately put the game out of reach. Buckeye second baseman Corey Kovanda's double
set up run scoring hits off the bats of Ryan Dew and Meade that would chase
Dartmouth freshman Jake Pruner (Triangle, Va.) from the game. And while Dartmouth
did outscore Ohio
State 6-2 over the final
five frames, the early deficit would prove to be too much.
Lost in the game was the pitching of Dartmouth's bullpen. Freshman Ryan Smith (Greenlawn, N.Y.)
(1.2 IP, 2 SO) made his third relief appearance of the season and ran his
strikeout total to seven with a pair of punch outs in his one and two thirds
inning of work. Fellow freshman Dan
Ternowchek (Glenmoore, Pa.), making his first collegiate
appearance, pitched the final three innings against the Buckeyes (7-4),
yielding four hits.
Dartmouth (3-3) returns to
action tomorrow, with a single game against Akron, with first pitch coming at 10:00am.
