Box Score
BRADENTON, Fla.
- Four runs over the final three innings wasn't enough for the Big Green, as Akron's Jake Plata's run scoring single in the sixth
inning was the difference in the Zips' 6-5 victory over Dartmouth today.
Four different Akron
pitchers managed to hold off another strong day at the plate for the Big Green. One day after totaling twenty five hits in
two games, Dartmouth
pounded out twelve hits.
Locked in a 1-1 tie, Akron
pushed across three runs on four hits in the fourth. Vince Chiera and Brian Kordal opened the
frame with back-to-back hits before catcher John Turk lifted his first homerun
of the season to right field. Solo runs crossed
the plate in each of the next two innings off of senior starter Chase Carpenter
(Bartlett, Tenn.) (5.2 IP, 10 hits, 4 SO).
With a deficit of 6-1 in the seventh, Dartmouth responded with three runs to jump
back in the game. Sophomore Jim Wren (Granbury, Texas) and freshman Jeff Onstott (Houston,
Texas) coaxed consecutive singles before
senior third baseman Jason McManis (Flower Mound, Texas) singled sharply up the middle to
plate a pair of runs. Junior catcher Kyle Evans (Springfield,
Mo.) followed that up with yet another hit
before senior Jason Blydell's (Nahant,
Mass.) single to right field
capped off the five hit, three-run inning.
One inning later, Dartmouth
mounted another rally off of Akron
reliever Ryne Romick. With sophomore Nick
Santomauro (North Caldwell, N.J.)
on first via a walk, sophomore outfielder Brett Gardner (Bellevue, Wash.)
singled to center field and senior pinch hitter Damon Wright (Dallas, Texas)
drove in the team's fifth and final run of the day with a single through the
left side of the infield. But that would
be the end of the scoring on the afternoon for Dartmouth,
as Akron's
(10-7) Drew Tuorcy recorded his first save of the season.
Three different Big Green players (Gardner, Wren, McManis)
collected at least two hits in the twelve hit assault
Dartmouth (3-4) continues its spring trip tomorrow afternoon as the Big Green hook up with the Redhawks of Miami University of Ohio.
