PROVIDENCE, R.I.
? Senior co-captain Damon Wright (Dallas, Texas) and classmate Erik Bell (Sierra Madre, Calif.) added two homers apiece in the doubleheader as Dartmouth took three of
four from Brown over the weekend with a sweep on Sunday.
The Big Green collected four homeruns and held off a
charging Brown squad to take game one, 9-7, and followed that with 16 runs on 17
hits to outscore the Bears to take the nightcap, 16-14.
Dartmouth
improves to 17-10 on the season and moved its impressive Ivy mark to 10-2 on
the season.
Bell
went 3-for-8 during the twin bill with two homers, five runs batted in and four
runs scored. Seniors Jason McManis (Flower Mound, Texas)
and Jason Blydell (Nahant, Mass.) collected five hits in eight at bats
with three RBI going to McManis and four to Blydell.
On the mound, sophomore Robert Young (Cleburne, Texas)
posted his third win of the season in game one, throwing six innings and giving
up six runs on nine hits and fanning four. Freshman Ryan Smith (Greenlawn, N.Y.)
relieved Young in the seventh and got a double play with the tying run on base
to close out the game for one of his two saves on the afternoon. He entered
game two in the sixth and went the final four innings, allowing four runs on three
hits and striking out four.
Senior Chase Carpenter (Bartlett, Tenn.)
got the start in the night cap and went five innings, allowing 10 runs, six
earned. He earned his fourth win of the season, which ties him with senior
co-captain Russell Young (Cleburne,
Texas) for the team lead.
In game one, sophomore Nick Santomauro (North Caldwell, N.J.)
gave the Big Green a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Bell and freshman
Jeff Onstott (Houston, Texas) led off with back-to-back walks, then Santomauro crushed
a 3-2 pitch to right field for the three-run blast. Only one batter later, Wright
took one deep for a solo homer to make it 4-0.
After Brown got two back in the second, the Big Green increased
its lead to 7-2 with three runs in the fourth. Senior Jason Blydell (Nahant, Mass.)
singled through the right side to plate Wright, who reached on a base hit,
stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. Junior Jack Monahan (Overland Park, Kan.)
then moved runners over with a sacrifice bunt and McManis connected on a
two-run single to push the lead to 7-2.
In the sixth inning, McManis and Bell recorded back-to-back homers, which
turned out to be very important, to make it 9-2 Big Green. Brown fired back
with a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth to cut the deficit to 9-6 and
added another in the seventh, but Smith was able to shut the door for the win.
In game two, Dartmouth
came out on top with a 16-14 win, in which the Big Green collected 17 hits.
The Big Green jumped out to another first inning lead with a
two runs in the top of the first. Bell led off
with a double then Brown walked three Dartmouth
batters, including Wright, which plated Bell
for a 1-0 lead. Senior James Wren (Granbury,
Texas) increased it to 2-0 with a
sacrifice fly to score Onstott who walked to get on base.
Brown took its first lead with two in the second and a
single run in the third inning to take a 3-2 lead. Dartmouth fired back with
six runs in the top of the fourth, highlighted by a three-run homer by Bell for
his fifth homerun of the season and second of the day.
In the inning, junior Michael Pagliarulo (Winchester,
Mass.) had an RBI single and Blydell's two-run
single up the middle gave Dartmouth
an 8-3 advantage.
The Bears fought back again with a five-run fourth with four
of the five runs coming on one swing as J.J. Eno connected on Brown's second
grand slam of the afternoon to even the score at 8-8.
Dartmouth
took its third lead of the game with five runs in the top of the sixth. Two of
the three runs were scored on a error by the first baseman, while Monahan
singled home the third run to make it 11-8. Brown then walked in another run
and Onstott flied out to left field to plate the fifth run on a sacrifice fly
to make it 14-8.
Brown got two back in the bottom of the inning, but Dartmouth answered with
two in the ninth to make it 16-13. Blydell drove in one run with an RBI triple,
followed by a suicide squeeze from Monahan. The Bears got one back in the
ninth, but that was it as the Big Green made it three of four over the weekend.
Dartmouth will be back in
action on Tuesday evening as the Big Green travels north to Vermont
for a non-conference game at 5:30 p.m. from Centennial Park.
