BURLINGTON, Vt. ? The Dartmouth baseball team got an early lead, but could not hold off Vermont as the Big Green fell to the Catamounts, 8-7, in extra innings from Centennial Field.

Dartmouth drops to 17-11 on the season, while Vermont improves to 14-11.

Junior Johnathon Santopadre (Vacaville, Calif.) led the Big Green at the plate with two hits and three runs batted in, while senior Erik Bell (Sierra Madre, Calif.) collected two hits, an RBI and three runs scored.

On the mound, sophomore Ben Murray (Grants Pass, Ore.) had a solid start as he went six innings, allowing just one run on five hits and fanning one.

Junior Michael Pagliarulo (Winchester, Mass.) put Dartmouth on top 1-0 in the first with an RBI triple to center field that scored sophomore Nick Santomauro (North Caldwell, N.J.) who reached on single up the middle.

After Vermont tied the score in the bottom of the first with a sacrifice fly, Dartmouth fired back with a three spot in the second to up the lead to 4-1. The Big Green scored thanks to fielding errors by the Catamounts. Bell doubled down the left field line to plate freshman Sam Bean (Needham, Mass.) who got on base on an error. The big play came next as Santopadre grounded one to the shortstop, but he couldn't make the play and that scored two to make it 4-1 Big Green.

In the sixth inning, Dartmouth extended its lead to 6-1 after two walks by Catamount pitching, which was followed by an two-run single from Santopadre to give the Big Green a commanding 6-1 lead.

Vermont was able to get back in the game as Ethan Paquette singled up the middle and plated two runs for the Catamounts to cut the deficit to 6-3.

Santopadre once again was the clutch hitter for the Big Green with his third run batted in of the game in the eighth to make it 7-3. He doubled to score Bell who made it all the way from first after he singled.

The Catamounts fought back to tie the game with four runs in the bottom of the ninth to make it 7-7. Paquette singled to force home the first run of the frame to cut the lead to 7-4, before Kyle Henry tied the game with a double to left center that plated three to even the score.

In the 10th, Vermont took advantage of a Dartmouth error when Matt Duffy was able to reach second base on the two-base miscue. He then scored on a double by Miguel Magrass to give the Catamounts the 8-7 victory in extra innings.

Dartmouth will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as the Big Green host Holy Cross in another non-conference midweek game at 3 p.m. from Red Rolfe Field.
