LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. ? Despite three long balls, the Dartmouth baseball team saw its seven-game winning streak come to end as the Big Green fell to Siena, 10-8, in a non-conference mid-week matchup.

Senior Erik Bell (Sierra Madre, Calif.), senior co-captain Damon Wright (Dallas, Texas) and sophomore Brett Gardner (Bellevue, Wash.) each homered for Dartmouth, including a three-run blast by Bell. Sophomore Nick Santomauro (North Caldwell, N.J.) led the Big Green with three hits in four at-bats and a run batted in, while Gardner went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

Sophomore Ben Murray (Grants Pass, Ore.) got his first start of the season and went the first three innings, giving up three runs on three hits and fanning one. Freshmen Colin Britton (Poughquag, N.Y.) and Dan Ternowchek (Glenmoore, Pa.) did a nice job in the middle as Britton went two frames, allowing one run on four hits, while Ternowchek pitched two innings of no-hit ball.

Dartmouth (10-8, 4-0 Ivy) did what it has done repeatedly during the streak as the Big Green jumped on top 2-0 in the top of the second inning. Junior Michael Pagliarulo (Winchester, Mass.) was able to reach on an error by the third baseman and Gardner took advantage with a two-run blast after being down in the count early.

Siena got two hitters to reach base on walk and an error, so with first and second, the Saints had something going, but Murray induced a ground ball to the shortstop for the 6-4-3 double play to end the threat.

In the third inning, it was the long ball that provided all of the offense for both squads. Wright connected on his fourth homerun to give the Big Green a 4-0 advantage. Siena got to within one run thanks to a three-run round tripper from Jacob Willis.

The Big Green continued to knock the ball out of the park as Bell recorded his third homerun of the year, driving in three runs to give Dartmouth a 7-3 lead. Juniors Kyle Evans (Springfield, Mo.) and Johnathon Santopadre (Vacaville, Calif.) scored on the play after getting on base with back-to-back walks.

The Saints got one back in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Gary DerHagopian to cut the deficit to 7-4. Siena loaded the bases with three-straight singles, followed by the sacrifice fly that scored Moises Rivera, then Ternowchek relieved Britton and he got the final two outs on a strikeout and a ground out.

After a scoreless seventh, freshman Jeff Onstott (Houston, Texas) increased the lead to 8-4 with an RBI single that scored Evans in the eighth. Evans led off the inning with single, advanced to second on sacrifice bunt by Santpadre and went to third on a ground out, before scoring on the single.

In the bottom of the eighth, Siena took its first lead with six runs to make it 10-8 in favor of the Saints. They loaded the bases with one out and after strikeout, scored on an error by the Big Green to cut the lead to 8-5.

Siena was not done there as Kevin Quaranto connected on a bases-clearing double to tie the game at 8-8. Eric Mruczek then gave the Saints their first lead of the game with an RBI double that scored Quaranto to take a 9-8 advantage. Siena added another run on a single Rivera to extend its lead to 10-8.

Dartmouth got the lead-off hitter on base, but that was followed by a double play and ground out to end the ball game as the Big Green saw its seven-game winning streak come to end.

The Big Green will be opening its home Ivy Schedule this coming weekend at Red Rolfe Field as Dartmouth plays host to Penn with a twin bill at 12 p.m. on Saturday, followed by another doubleheader at noon on Sunday against Columbia.
