BOSTON, Mass. - Dartmouth women's crew traveled to the Charles River this weekend to compete in the annual Charles River Challenge. Throughout the two-day event, Big Green boats faced six other crews, racing twice on Saturday and once this morning.
Dartmouth's first varsity eight started yesterday by going to the line against Radcliffe, Syracuse, and Texas. Although the Big Green beat the latter two teams handily with a time of 6:27.80, Radcliffe took first, crossing the finish line in 6:22.00.
The morning races that followed saw similar results, as the second varsity eight and third varsity "A" four both beat Texas and Syracuse, but fell to Radcliffe. The third varsity "B" four, however, saw victory, beating the Radcliffe boat by just over 25 seconds in a time of 7:35.50. The novice eight saw a third-place finish in 7:02.60, while the second novice four finished second in 7:53.43.
Saturday afternoon racing saw Dartmouth again face Radcliffe as well as Notre Dame. The Big Green women beat Notre Dame by just over two seconds in the varsity eight, with a time of 6:28.24, and saw victory over the Irish in the novice eight as well, with a time of 6:58.51. However, although the Green was able to beat Notre Dame to the line, it was unable to take its revenge against the Crimson in the same races, and ended up with second-place finishes.
The 2V eight and 3V four had trouble with the Irish in addition to the Crimson, finishing third, while the 3V four "B" boat finished second behind Notre Dame in a field of four, as Boston University joined the mix.
Although Saturday's results were mixed, this morning's racing saw success for the Big Green as it went to the line against Gonzaga in the first and second varsity eights and the third varsity four. The 1V and 2V eights were both victorious with times of 6:32.70 and 6:44.90 respectively, and saw winning margins of around 10 seconds apiece. The 3V eight was less fortunate, taking second to Gonzaga with a time of 7:39.93.
Dartmouth women's crew will race at home next weekend, facing both Penn and Princeton on Saturday, April 26.
