HANOVER, N.H. - Matt Muffleman '03 (Mobjack, Va.) a former Dartmouth lightweight rower earned a gold medal at the World Championships in Linz/Ottensheim, Austria. Another former athlete, John Nicols '01 (Palo Alto, Calif.) also competed, finishing sixth in the "B" finals of the lightweight men's pairs.
Muffelman's gold came in the lightweight men's eight boat. The U.S. boat, which contained their Olympic lightweight four, trailed the Dutch and Italians early. The Danes jumped out into the lead and held on to it for the first half of the race before the U.S. took a commanding lead in the third 500 meters, holding off the hard-charging Germans to win by 1.4 seconds. The victory was particularly impressive for Muffelman, who had to withdraw from the 2007 team and then had surgery last summer which sidelined him for 6 months. Muffelman's fellow rowers included Simon Carcagno, Andrew Bolton, Colin Farrell, Mike Altman, Patrick Todd, Will Daly, Thomas Paradiso and Ned Del Guercio.
