In sports, coaches always love a player that comes to play every night and continues to be a consistent player on the ice. The senior defenseman has been one of the Big Green's most reliable players on the blue line since she arrived on campus.
“Julia has been a steadfast blue liner for the last three years,” said head coach Mark Hudak. “She has had a significant role in all aspects of our game since her arrival.”
Each season, the Arlington, Va., native, has been in the top 10 in points and has led the defense in scoring. Her best year came last season as she racked up a career-high 23 points on six goals, also a career-high, and 17 assists. Bronson was tied for the team-lead in game-winning goals with three a season ago.
“Julia is someone we can count on to provide good strong play in our defensive zone and at the same time can expect her to be an offensive threat,” mentioned Hudak. “Whether it is 5 on 5, power play of penalty kill - I have a ton of confidence in her abilities to do the job well.”
Coming into this midseason showdown with the Crimson, Bronson has totaled 58 points in 107 career games for the Big Green and needs just three points to crack the all-time Dartmouth top 10 in career points for defensemen. She is also among the top assist getters in Big Green history and needs two helpers to reach the top 10 in that category as well.
Why Dartmouth?
I fell in love with Dartmouth the first time I visited. Not only does Dartmouth offer the ultimate package between prestigious academics and competitive athletics; but I also believe that one of the school's greatest attributes is its sense of community. I knew that this was a place I could consider a home for my next four years and would create lasting friendships.
Dinner with anyone, past or present, who would it be?
I would have to say I'd like to have dinner with Alexander Ovechkin and George Washington. Alexander Ovechkin is the captain of the Washington Capitals and I am confident he will lead them to a Stanley Cup Championship within the next couple of years. George Washington has been consistently ranked as one of the best presidents in our nation's history, and with our current economic crisis I think it would be very interesting to see what his take would be on the situation.
Who would you want to play you in a movie?
I would have Jennifer Lopez play me in a movie... the resemblance is uncanny! I'm just kidding, but really, I love Maid in Manhattan and both of us do have dark hair and are fluent in Spanish.
Most unforgettable moment as a member of the team, both on and off the ice?
My most unforgettable moment on the ice would be winning the Ivy League and ECAC regular-season championship in 2006-07 after defeating Yale in overtime. In terms of off the ice, the most unforgettable moment was last year over winter interim when our team was split up into groups so that we could compete in a gingerbread house making contest at our annual Christmas party. My group's gingerbread house got first place.
What do you enjoy doing when not playing hockey?
When I am not playing hockey, I enjoy watching movies, playing video games and board games, soccer if possible, dancing, going on dinner dates, and of course spending time with friends.
Who first got you interested in hockey and at what age did you first start?
This is simple... my older brother, ALEX! He was the one who instilled my competitive edge in sports by always getting me involved, whether it was throwing me in goal or letting me shoot pucks at him. Alex started playing hockey first at age 7 and so I followed a few months later at age 5.
What movies do you and your teammates enjoy watching on long road trips?
We enjoy watching a lot of different movies on long road trips, most recently we've watched Sydney White, SWAT, Miracle, and at this time of the season we watch Charlie Brown's Christmas (tradition accredited to Shannon Bowman).
If you could trade shoes with any one in the world today, who's would you chose and why?
I'm going to have to go with Alexander Ovechkin again. He just signed a 13-year contract for $124 million this year just to play the best game on earth. Therefore, I would get to live in my hometown, have the key to the city in D.C., still be about the same age, play competitive ice hockey, be an NHL superstar, and have an unbelievable salary... sounds pretty nice to me.
What was your most embarrassing moment on the ice?
My most embarrassing moment was when my equipment got lost for a few days at the airport in Minnesota, so in order to practice, I had to wear a combination of all my teammates old equipment. If you don't know, I am a ?tall drink of water' so wearing equipment that was half my size was just extremely goofy and awkward.
What is on your iPod?
Haha... my ipod seriously covers every genre of music. I'd have to say some of my top artists right now are Akon, Lil Wayne, Keke Palmer, Juanes, Cat Stevens, Jon McLaughlin, Taylor Swift, and Garth Brooks.
Who has been the most influential person in your success in both academics and
athletics?
There is no single person I can attribute to my success in both academics and athletics, but rather my entire family! My parents have always made it possible that I have every opportunity and resource from the unconditional support and love that they have provided and continue to provide, which has created the stepping stones necessary to lead me in the right direction to succeed in academics, athletics, and life in general. Thanks Mom and Dad!
What are your plans following Dartmouth?
Following graduation, I am planning on applying to dental school. However, I plan to take a year off where I will finish a few pre-dental requirements and during that time I am also considering playing hockey in either Sweden or Canada.
