HANOVER, N.H. ? Senior Ray Allen (Longwood, Fla.) and junior Jim Wren (Granbury, Texas) both equaled career highs by racking up four RBIs each to lead host Dartmouth (23-13) to a 13-5 triumph over the Hartford Hawks on a blustery Tuesday afternoon at Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park. The Big Green had just nine hits in the game, but drew a season-high 11 walks from the Hawk pitchers to bolster the offense.
Hartford hurler Matt Govoni (1-3) struggled with his command from the get-go, walking the first three batters to load the bases. He got a pop-up for the first out before Allen ripped a two-run single over the shortstop's head. Wren immediately followed with a triple to deep center, extending his hitting streak to 15 games and bring home two more runs. Freshman Jake Carlson (Woodlands, Texas) picked up an RBI when Wren scampered home on a slow roller to third, giving Dartmouth a 5-0 lead after one inning.
In the second, the Hawks got on the board when Victor Santana sent a 1-2 offering with two outs over the left-field fence for his first collegiate home run. Hartford got another two-out run in the fourth when Santana, Rodger Wilmot and Drew Sgro each hit singles, with Santana scoring on Sgro's safety, to make it 5-2.
The Big Green loaded the bases again in the bottom of the fourth on singles by senior Johnathon Santopadre (Vacaville, Calif.) and freshman Joe Sclafani, plus a one-out walk to junior Nick Santomauro (North Caldwell, N.J.). Senior Mike Pagliarulo (Winchester, Mass.) worked the count full before getting hit by a pitch, forcing in a run. With two gone, Wren and Carlson each worked a walk to force in two more runs and make it 8-2.
Sophomore southpaw Colin Britton (Poughquag, N.Y.) had to work hard to get through the fifth inning, beginning with a lead-off homer by Jason Freethey, his second of the season. Mike Amendola banged a one-out single, but was erased when senior catcher Kyle Evans (Springfield, Mo.) gunned him down trying to steal second. It proved costly for the Hawks when Andy Drexel singled, went to second on a passed ball and Matt Walker drew a base on balls. Santana then recorded his third hit with a knock back through the box to plate Drexel. Britton bore down and got Wilmot to hit into a fielder's choice to end the frame.
Dartmouth got those two runs back times two in the bottom half, loading the bases with nobody out again on a Santopadre double, Sclafani walk and single by sophomore Jeff Onstott (Houston, Texas). Reliever Myles Kelly induced an infield pop-up for the first out, and Pagliarulo hit into what looked like a tailor-made double play. But he hustled down the line and beat the relay throw, allowing Santopadre to score and keep the inning alive. His hustle paid off as Allen hit a double just inside the third-base bag, bringing home both Sclafani and Pagliarulo. Wren poked a single between the first and second basemen, and Allen motored home for a 12-4 Big Green lead.
Britton (3-2) was lifted after five innings, having yielded four runs on 10 hits with one walk and one strikeout. He was replaced by sophomore Dan Ternowchek (Glenmoore, Pa.), who retired five of the first six hitters he faced to stretch his scoreless streak to 10.2 innings. But Walker belted a solo homer to right-center with two out in the seventh, his first of the year, to bring the streak to an end.
The final run Dartmouth came home in the eighth when Wren doubled, pinch-runner Sam Bean (Needham, Mass.) moved up to third on a groundball, and senior Jack Monahan (Overland Park, Kan.) drove him home with a sacrifice fly to right.
The triple by Wren was the 18th of the season for the Big Green, a school record. The defense also recorded its 42nd double play of the year, tying the team record set last year in six more games.
Dartmouth plays its final regular season game of the spring tomorrow afternoon at Boston College (27-17) at 3 p.m., while Hartford travels to Vermont this weekend to play the Catamounts in a four-game America East Conference series, beginning with a twinbill Saturday at noon.
