Mark Goggin: Raised in Boston Tradition

Chicago-born Goggin is beginning to look like a true New Englander
BOSTON, MA -- After being drafted by the Bruins in the seventh round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, 17-year old Mark Goggin was a little intimidated entering into last July's edition of the Boston Bruins Development Camp.
And why not?
What with just two weeks to prepare in between the time he was drafted and the start of camp, it's pretty easy to understand why the American prep schooler was a little overwhelmed in his first camp experience with a professional team and amongst some outstanding players from all over the world.
However, Goggin clearly held his own and just one year later, the now 18-year old Choate-Rosemary Hall graduate felt much more at ease with the whole process at Wilmington's Ristuccia Memorial Arena.
“It's been a lot more fun getting to know everybody here,” said Goggin. “It's my second year...so it's been a lot better than last year.
“I feel more comfortable.”
Feeling more comfortable also means being able to relax and enjoy the off-ice activities in the city of Boston without dwelling on what is happening on the ice.
“Red Sox game night is a lot of fun,” said a very enthusiastic Goggin of the new B's now annual trip to Boston's lyric little bandbox of a ballpark.
You see, unlike many of his Canadian counterparts (many of whom grew up rooting for the Bosox rivals in Toronto), Goggin is no stranger to Fenway Park and Red Sox nation, in particular.
“I'm from Chicago but all my family is from Boston and I spent summer's up here,” said Goggin. “And every year for my birthday (July 29) my grandfather takes me to Red Sox games.
“So I've been going to Red Sox games for longer than I can remember”.
Some things never change, and this summer will be no different for the college-bound Goggin.
In September, Mark is becoming a full-time New Englander by way of Hanover, New Hampshire and the Ivy League's Big Green.
But before heading off to Dartmouth College to join his brother Connor (a defenseman who attended last year's B's development camp with the younger Goggin), the young B's prospect plans on enjoying his summer on Cape Cod with his family and friends.
“We go fishing a lot,” said Goggin of his off-ice activities. “I'll play some golf, hang out with my family and friends, go to the beach and work out,”
Family, friends, the Sox and playing hockey with the B's: sounds like the perfect way to enjoy a final summer before college.
