HANOVER, N.H. – The #6 Dartmouth men's soccer team recorded its fourth-straight shutout with a 2-0 victory over Rhode Island (2-2) to win the 2009 Hypertherm Classic Tournament.
The Big Green (3-0-1) has yet to surrender a goal this season. Dartmouth finished the weekend with a 1-0-1 record including its scoreless double-overtime tie with #18 UConn on Friday. Junior Daniel Keat (Wellington, New Zealand) picked up Tournament Offensive MVP accolades after scoring both goals in the win today.
Dartmouth earned every bit of its 2-0 victory today, but it was a team effort with 19 players seeing action including seniors Donnie Surdoval (Sparta, N.J.) and Derek Stenquist (Hudson, Mass.), who made their season debut after coming back from injury.
Junior goalkeeper Lyman Missimer (The Woodlands, Texas) made seven saves to record the shutout including two big stops in the first 20 minutes. The Rams had a dangerous corner followed by a Thomas Lindroos attack in the eighth minute but Missimer won the collision. Ten minutes later he leapt for a save against Dwayne Williams, who hit Missimer hard in the air but he held onto the ball and cleared the threat.
Dartmouth picked up its first goal in the 25th minute after Lucky Mkosana (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe) was taken down just outside the 18 yard box. Keat stepped up for the direct kick and hooked it around a five-man URI wall and past a diving Chris Pennock for the 1-0 lead.
Rhode Island's Jonathan Pereira nearly had the equalizer in the 33rd minute with a one-on-one against Missimer, but the Dartmouth keeper stood his ground and came up with the ball. The Rams ultimately finished the half with a 6-4 advantage in shots.
Dartmouth upped the pressure in the second half with its strikers hungry for more goals. Andrew Olsen (Norwell, Mass.) made some great runs including one in the 59th minute when he beat two defenders before being taken down in the box as he shot. There was no call and he wasn't able to get enough on the ball to beat a retreating Pennock.
Olsen got what he was looking for just a minute later when he was fouled in the box to earn a Dartmouth penalty kick. Keat stepped up and moved to 2-for-2 on the season with a hard shot to the right side and the 2-0 lead. Olsen nearly got one of his own five minutes later with a booming kick that hit the corner of the crossbar and post.
Rhode Island had a few good late attempts but Missimer held tough to keep the clean sheet intact.
The teams finished equal in shots, 10-10 while URI took seven corners to Dartmouth's two.
The Big Green heads to the West coast next weekend for the University of San Diego Tournament. Dartmouth takes on the host San Diego on Friday, Sept. 18 at 10:00 p.m. EST.
