San Diego, Calif. - The #5 Dartmouth men's soccer team remained unbeaten with a 2-1 comeback victory at the University of San Diego this evening.
Dartmouth remains unbeaten on the season, improving to 4-0-1 while San Diego drops to 3-2 in the opening game of the San Diego Nike Classic.
It was a fairly even contest in which the Toreros had a slight shot advantage over the Big Green, 8-7, and the teams took five corner kicks apiece. Rookie goalkeeper Sean Donovan (Burr Ridge, Ill.) picked up his second collegiate victory with three saves.
San Diego struck first in the contest, taking a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute when Marcelo Carminatti headed the ball past Donovan off a booming cross from Charles Blasé. After outshooting the Big Green, 6-2, in the half, the Toreros took their 1-0 lead into halftime.
Dartmouth rallied in the second half, taking five shots to San Diego's two and earning all five of its corner kicks in the period.
The Big Green made good in the 64th minute when junior Austin Bowers (Old Greenwich, Conn.) scored his first collegiate goal off a feed from sophomore Lucky Mkosana (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe) to tie the game. Bowers' had been making some great runs of late and his persistence paid off tonight.
Dartmouth kept the pressure on and just 14 minutes later earned the game-winner. Kiwi countrymen Craig Henderson (Wellington, New Zealand) and Daniel Keat (Wellington, New Zealand) combined for the go-ahead goal in the 77th. Henderson scored his second of the season off an assist from Keat, who now has nine points on the season.
The Big Green held off the Toreros in the final 13 minutes to take the win.
#5 Dartmouth faces a fellow ranked opponent in #18 Loyola Marymount on Sunday, Sept. 20 at 11 a.m. Pacific/2 p.m. Eastern.
