HANOVER, N.H. — Entering the second and final round in fifth place but trailing by just four strokes, Dartmouth combined to shoot a stellar four-under par (280) as a team to win its home tournament with a 299-280—579 (+11). The Big Green edged out Yale by four strokes, while Fordham finished 14 strokes back to place third.
Freshman James Pleat shot a three-under 68 on the day to tie for the lead, then won the playoff with Fordham's Jason Del Rosso by scoring a par on the first hole to win medalist honors. The top scorer on the par-4 holes, Pleat posted seven birdies and an eagle in his two rounds.
Only three players were able to break par in the final round, played during a soft steady rain. The low round was posted by Big Green sophomore Peter Williamson with a 67 (-4), who scored an eagle today and finished the tournament in a tie for fourth with a one-over 143. The only other player to shoot under par was Charles Smith of Fordham with 68, one day after carding an 84.
Senior Dave Putney finished up a solid tournament, shooting 74-73—147 (+5) to give Dartmouth a third player among the top 10 as he tied for 10th. Sophomore Teddy Overton played a strong round with a one-over 72 to finish the tournament at eight-over par (150). Rounding out the Dartmouth squad was junior co-captain Davis Mullany with a 154 (+12).
The Big Green also had a second team playing, which placed eighth out of the 13 participating squads. Freshman Owen Lynch led the group with a 74-76—150 (+8), equaling Overton to tie for 19th, while fellow frosh Andrew Jankowski was just two strokes behind them in a tie for 30th. Rounding out the scores were sophomore Braden Long with 78s both day for a 14-over 156, senior Dan Egan with a pair of 81s and senior co-captain Shunsuke Aonuma with a 167 for the two rounds.
Dartmouth will attempt to win a second straight tournament next weekend when the Big Green play at the MacDonald Invitational at Yale on Oct. 3-4.
