The Dartmouth women's soccer team takes center stage to cap a Saturday full of athletic events when it hosts Penn at 7 p.m. on Burnham Field.
The Big Green (3-7-1, 1-2 Ivy) needs a win to get to .500 in Ivy play and will also look to snap a three-game skid. The Quakers (6-6, 2-1 Ivy), fresh off a 4-0 drubbing of Wagner, could use a victory to keep pace with league-leader Princeton, who stands at 3-0.
Game 12: Dartmouth (3-7-1, 1-2 Ivy) vs. Penn (6-6, 2-1
Ivy)
Date: Saturday, Oct. 16, 2010 • 7:00 PM
Location: Burnham Field • Hanover, N.H.
Series Record: Dartmouth leads, 18-16-2
Last Meeting: 10/18/09, Philadelphia, Penn W, 5-1
Dartmouth dominated the early part of the series with six straight wins, as
Penn did not field a varsity team until 1991. The squads played four
consecutive overtime games from 1999-2002 with two wins apiece. The Big Green
has won three of the last five, though Penn took a victory last fall and in
2007.

A LOOK AT DARTMOUTH: Dartmouth comes into Saturday's contest looking to snap a three-game skid and with a bit of revenge on the menu. Last season the Quakers derailed the senior-laden Big Green's track to an Ivy Championship with a shocking 5-1 win in Philadelphia. The Big Green can even its Ivy record and return the favor to the Quakers, who are trying to stay in striking distance at 2-1 in Ivy play. Dartmouth will look to kick its offense into high gear this time out, having scored just two goals in its past three games. On Wednesday, the Big Green took its best shot at Boston University but the Terriers (11-5) won their eighth straight shutout contest, 1-0. Dartmouth appeared to score an early goal only to have its celebration cut short by a controversial offsides flag. In its most recent Ivy game against Yale last Saturday, Dartmouth saw an early 1-0 lead evaporate when the Bulldogs scored three unanswered goals in a 15 minute span to clinch a 3-1 win all before halftime.
Rookie Marina Moschitto (Andover, Mass.) leads Dartmouth in scoring with six points on three goals. Junior striker Aly O'Dea (Irvine, Calif.) scored the lone goal against Yale, moving her season total to two. Junior Colleen Hogan (Houston, Texas) has played every minute in goal, making 36 saves with a 1.34 goals against average. Hogan recently made seven saves in the loss to Boston University.
A LOOK AT PENN: Penn's 6-6 overall record is fairly indicative of the Quakers' season to date. The team has strung together back-to-back wins just once - a 3-0 win over Villanova on Sept. 5 and a 1-0 win over St. Joseph's on Sept. 10 - and also only lost two straight once. Those losses came this month at Army, 1-0 and to Columbia, 2-1. The Penn offense certainly comes in spurts, as the Quakers have broken out for more than three goals on four occasions, including its recent 4-0 win over Wagner on Wednesday and a 4-3 win over defending champ Harvard in the Ivy opener for both.
Freshman Kerry Scalora leads Penn in scoring with nine points on four goals and one assist. Sarah Friedman is the Quakers' top playmaker, ranking first on the team in assist with six and second in overall scoring with eight points. Defensively, junior goalkeeper Caroline Williams has made 51 saves en route to a 1.09 goals against average.
ROOKIES GETTING THEIR KICKS: Dartmouth's eight freshmen have seen their fair share of action so far this season. Chief among those is Marina Moshitto (Andover, Mass.), who has started every game in midfield and leads the team in scoring with three goals. Chrissy Lozier (Fairfield, Conn.) has played in nine games with two starts and tallied one goal and one assist while Allison Yeager (N. Potomac, Md.) just returned from an injury and is back in the starting lineup, with seven appearances this fall.
LAST LINE OF DEFENSE: While Dartmouth has struggled at times to put the ball in the back of the net offensively, the Big Green's veteran defense has been a strength. Senior captains Sarah Bromley (La Jolla, Calif.), Melisa Krnjaic (Washington, D.C.) and junior Erin Fleischli (San Mateo, Calif.) have been starters throughout their careers, anchoring the line. Sophomores Grace Best (Downingtown, Pa.) and Aurelia Solomon (Washington, D.C.) have been fearless in their second collegiate season, impacting not only the defensive end, but contributing offensively as well. The Big Green's defense is allowing 11.5 shots per game, with just 4.7 of those coming on goal.
SHE'S A VETERAN NOW: In her sixth season, head coach Angie Hind is now tied with Steve Swanson (1990-95) as the longest-tenured Dartmouth coach. With such a rich history of success, many former coaches are still in the collegiate game including Swanson, now at Virginia, Erica Walsh at Penn State and Ben Landis at Bucknell. With 51 wins to her credit, Hind is just four victories away from tying Swanson for the most wins by a head coach in program history. Though he only coached one season, Neil Orr is the Big Green's winningest coach by win percentage at .735, while Walsh ranks second at .703.
NEXT TIME OUT: The Big Green hits the road to take on Vermont on Tuesday afternoon before traveling to Columbia for an Ivy contest on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m.
