On Oct. 27, 2010, Dartmouth lost a former coach and friend when John F. Kenfield, Jr., Dartmouth head's men's tennis and squash coach from 1967-83, died peacefully in North Carolina. Coach Kenfield was 89 years old and residing in an assisted living facility with his wife Carol.
Kenfield came to Dartmouth in 1967 from North Carolina State where he was the varsity tennis coach. He graduated from the University of North Carolina and played tennis for the Tar Heels, which were coached by his father.
While at Dartmouth he authored at least two books on tennis instruction with his wife as his editor. He also coached squash along with tennis, and although he was always self-deprecating about his lack of experience with squash, he picked the sport up very quickly and became a successful coach.

In Hanover, Kenfield always emphasized that academics should take precedence over athletics. He believed that there always came a season when every man should lay down his racket and read a good book.
Kenfield retired from Dartmouth in 1983. After that, he and his wife traveled the U.S., living in several communities in California, Colorado and Arizona before returning to his original home state in North Carolina. John F. Kenfield is survived by his wife Carol, and his children Kelsey, John and Mike.
