POTSDAM, N.Y. – On the road in the not-so-friendly confines of Cheel Arena, the Dartmouth men's hockey team took its biggest win over Clarkson since Bob Gaudet took over the program in 1988, thumping the Golden Knights, 7-1 on Friday night in ECAC Hockey action. It's Dartmouth's fist win in Potsdam since 2005. The Walsh brothers collectively had a big day for the Big Green as Dustin Walsh (Shannonville, Ont.) had three points and Nick Walsh (Shannonville, Ont.) recorded two.
With two power play goals in the opening frame the Big Green took an early 2-0 lead over the Golden Knights and never looked back. Matt Lindblad (Winnetka, Ill.) scored the first extra-man strike at 7:17 before Dustin Walsh added another one with 1:17 left in the period.
Lindblad lit the lamp with one second left in the power play on his second goal of the season. Lindblad, Mike Keenan (Weymouth, Mass.) and Dustin Walsh worked the puck from the far right circle to the top of the circle. Lindblad passed up to Keenan at the top and then moved down to the far right post. Keenan passed quickly down to Walsh who drew the goalie to the left side of the net and then centered the puck to Lindblad in front as the freshman put it behind the netminder for the score.
Walsh added the second power play goal off a hard slap shot from the blue line as Dartmouth was able to capitalize on two of its three power play opportunities early. Coming into the contest, the Big Green had scored just one goal with the extra skater as Dartmouth had been working on its special teams in the early goings of the season.
The Big Green pressured Clarkson goalie Paul Karpowich as soon as the puck dropped in the second period. The benefactor of that hard work was Troy Mattila (Rockford, Ill.) with his first goal of the year at 16:08. Traffic in front had Nick Walsh taking a shot on Karpowich as the rebound came out to a waiting Mattila.
Dustin Walsh tallied his second of the game at 10:32 after getting a pass just past center ice. He came in hard on the net and shot, rather nonchalantly, at the goal as he skated past with the puck sliding between the goalie and post.
Senior Adam Estoclet (Orono, Minn.) added to the scoreboard with his first of the season after linemates Scott Fleming (Plainfield, Ont.) and Matt Reber (Edina, Minn.) each took shots on Karpowich. Estoclet was there for the juicy rebound and put-back as members of the senior class got in on the scoring.
Nick Walsh and Doug Jones (Marietta, Ga.) teamed up for the sixth goal of the game early in the third period off another rebound.
Rookie Taylor Boldt (Niwot, Colo.) put the exclamation point on the night with his first collegiate goal off a slap shot from the blueline that gave the Big Green its final score.
The Golden Knights broke up James Mello's (Rehoboth, Mass.) shutout with 1:56 left in the game when Alex Boak was able to put the puck past a prone Mello, through traffic.
Mello was stellar in net for Dartmouth as the junior netminder recorded 32 saves on the night. Paul Karpowich and Richie LeVeau teamed up for 47 saves as the Big Green outshot the Golden Knights, 54-35.
Dartmouth will be back in action tomorrow night, traveling down the road to Canton, N.Y. for a matchup with St. Lawrence at 7 p.m.
