HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac's red-hot goalie made all the difference as the Bobcats netminder shut down every scoring chance by the Dartmouth men's hockey team to score a 2-0 victory for the home team.
Quinnipiac's netminder was the difference for the Bobcats as Eric Hartzell stymied Dartmouth all night, earning his first shutout of the season.
The Bobcats tallied the first score of the game with 5:33 remaining in the second period when Jeremy Langlois and John Dunbar passed the puck back and forth while skating down on a two-on-one. Langlois came down the right side, drawing James Mello (Rehoboth, Mass.) over before quickly shooting across ice to Dunbar who put it behind the netminder for the score. Scott Zurevinski struck with an empty net goal at 14.3 left in the contest for the second goal.
The Big Green held the lead in shots, 22-15, after the second break, but the Bobcats held the lead in goals as the blue and gold looked to win just their second league game of the season. Dartmouth did a great job throughout much of the game breaking up QU's passing lanes and not allowing the Bobcats to clear but it just wasn't enough.
The Big Green had several chances to get on the board early. Midway through the opening period, Adam Estoclet's (Orono, Minn.) centering pass came dangerously close to the goal line as Hartzell had to come out and slap the puck away. Then in the waning minutes of the frame, Kyle Reeds (St. Louis, Mo.) was camped at the left post and as Doug Jones (Marietta, Ga.) sent the puck down, Reeds could not get his stick down in time to slap it past Hartzell.
Despite tremendous pressure throughout much of the final period, Dartmouth could not find an answer for Hartzell in net as shot after shot was turned away. The shutout is the second on the Big Green this season.
Hartzell made 31 saves while Mello recorded 20. The loss is the first for Mello in 2010-011 as he is now 2-1-1 while Hartzell improved to 3-0. Dartmouth held the final tally in shots, 31-21. The Big Green falls to 3-3-1, 2-2-1 in the ECAC while Quinnipiac improves to 6-4-1, 2-2-1 ECAC.
The Big Green will be back in action tomorrow afternoon in a 4 p.m. tilt at Princeton.
