Dartmouth Men's Hockey Travels to Yale and Brown

HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth men's hockey team takes to the road at Yale and Brown this weekend. The Big Green is needing some important league points as the season is winding down and Dartmouth is looking to move up in the standings before the ECAC Hockey playoffs begin in March.

THIS WEEKEND'S GAMES
Dartmouth desperately needs some league points as the Big Green looks for its first ECAC Hockey sweep of the season.

DARTMOUTH-YALE SERIES
One of Dartmouth's longest running series is against Yale. The two began meeting in 1907 when the Big Green came away with a 4-2 win. The Bulldogs swept Dartmouth last year and took a 4-2 victory early this season. Despite those setbacks, the Big Green is 6-5 against Yale over the last 10 meetings. Currently Bob Gaudet is 17-11-3 against the Bulldogs.

SCOUTING YALE
Yale has split its last two weekends with wins over Clarkson and Union and losses to St. Lawrence and Rensselaer. The Bulldogs have gone 3-3 after going 7-1-1 in Dec. and early January.
    Three players have more than 20 points as sophomore Brian O'Neill is tops with 24. Junior Broc Little and senior Sean Backman each have 22.
    In net four netminders have seen time but two freshmen have played the most games. Nick Maricic has appeared in 10 games while Jeff Malcolm has eight. Maricic has a 2.63 GAA and a .900 save percentage while both have five wins.

DARTMOUTH-BROWN SERIES
The series between Brown and Dartmouth has been very tight as the Big Green holds a slim margin, just 65-63-7. Dartmouth has won the last three meetings over the Bears with a sweep last season and a 9-4 victory earlier this year. The Big Green has taken eight of the last 10 meetings. Bob Gaudet is currently 17-9-1 against his former school.

SCOUTING BROWN
The Bears come into the weekend on a three game non-losing streak with wins over Clarkson and Rensselaer and tie with Union. Brown had a five-game win streak come to close with a five-game losing streak but the Bears look to be rebounding.
    Junior Harry Zolnierczyk leads the team in scoring with 20 points while sophomore Jack Maclellan has 19. Zolnierczyk and Maclellan are the team's top goal scorers with nine apiece. Zolnierczyk and Devin Timberlake each lead the squad with 11 assists.
    In net Mike Clemente has carried the load, appearing in 20 games with a 3.25 GAA and a .903 save percentage.

NEXT UP
Dartmouth returns home for two straight weekends of ECAC play as the Big Green hosts Union and Rensselaer and then Colgate and Cornell.

LAST GAME
Dartmouth exacted revenge on Quinnipiac for a loss earlier this season. Adam Estoclet notched the game winner with 5:00 in the third for the 4-3 win.
    On Saturday, despite ending the first tied, Princeton scored three in the second period to sweep the Big Green with a 5-3 victory.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS
Junior Adam Estoclet was named the ECAC Hockey Player of the Week for Jan. 11. It is the first honor for a Dartmouth player so far this season.

TOP SCORERS
Junior Adam Estoclet is the Big Green's top point getters with 20 points. Classmate Scott Fleming is right behind with 19, he is also the top goal scorer with 10 while classmate Matt Reber is the top playmaker with 13 assists.

TO WALSH FROM WALSH
On Jan. 29 against Quinnipiac, rookie Dustin Walsh potted two goals with his older brother, Nick getting the assists. It was the first time this season the Walsh brothers connected for a goal, much less two.

STREAKING
Five players are currently on winning streaks. Scott Fleming is on a four-game streak, scoring four points while Adam Estoclet and Doug Jones have each notched points in the last three games. Estoclet has notched five points while Jones has four. Evan Stephens and Nick Walsh have each recorded three points in the last two contests.

“POWER”FUL BIG GREEN
With two power play goals against Quinnipiac on Jan. 29 it was the first time since Nov. 21 that Dartmouth has notched two power play goals in a game.

MELLO YELLOW
Sophomore James Mello started both games against Rensselaer and Union on Jan. 22 and 23. Against Union, Mello earned his first career win with a career-high 39 saves.

LEADERS 'TIL THE END
After a two-goal lead going into the third period against Union, Dartmouth came away with a 3-1 victory. The Big Green is now 4-1 after holding the lead going into the final period of play.

HERE'S A HAT
Junior Adam Estoclet recorded his first career hat trick on Jan. 8 against Brown. The junior tallied two in the first and one in the third. It is Dartmouth's first hat trick since David Jones on Feb. 24, 2006 against Clarkson.

A WHOLE LOT OF POINTS
With a goal and four assists against Brown on Jan. 8, Matt Reber was the first Dartmouth player since Mike Ouellette and Nick Johnson on Nov. 19, 2005 to record five points in a game.

PILING IT ON
Six different players recorded goals in a 9-4 victory over Brown on Jan. 8. Adam Estoclet, Nick Walsh, Kyle Reeds, Scott Fleming, Evan Stephens and Matt Reber each scored goals. Seven different players had a multiple point game against the Bears.

A SHORTY FOR THE HOME TEAM
Dartmouth's Evan Stephens scored the first shorthanded goal of the season against Brown on Jan. 8. It was the first in his career. Scott Fleming got into the act with one against Quinnipiac on Jan. 29.

STEPPING OUT OF HIS SHADOW
Older brothers Connor Goggin and Nick Walsh made their presence known on Jan. 8 against Brown. Goggin had two assists with five shots and a +4 while Walsh recorded a career-high three points with two goals while also notching a +4.

TO GOGGIN FROM GOGGIN
Against Brown, Mark and Connor Goggin both assisted on a goal then against Yale, Connor set younger brother Mark up for the Big Green's second goal of the game.

HE'S MY BROTHER
On Dec. 19 against Vermont, Dartmouth's three sets of brothers took to the ice together for the first time all season. Younger brothers Dustin Walsh, Mark Goggin and Jim Gaudet all played with older siblings Nick Walsh, Connor Goggin and Joe Gaudet. The siblings have now played in the past five Big Green games.

IN THE NICK OF TIME
Sophomore Nick Walsh has recorded six points in the last eight games he's played. The Big Green forward had played in just one game before appearing in the Vermont game on Dec. 19.

A BREAK-OUT GAME
Freshman Mark Goggin recorded his first multiple-point game of the season with two goals against Vermont on De. 19.

MATTER OF TIME
Rob Smith had the first goal of the season at 2:43 of the first period on Oct. 30. Kyle Reeds lit the lamp just 1:13 into the contest against Sacred Heart for the earliest goal scored this year. The latest goal was Josh Gillam's strike at 18:06 in the third on Nov. 29 against Harvard.

MATTER OF TIME, TAKE TWO
Mark Goggin tallied a goal with two seconds on the clock in the first period against Vermont on Dec. 19. Teammate Evan Stephens continued the excitement, scoring his second goal of the season with 11 ticks on the clock in the second period against the 'Cats.

STREAKING
Forwards Nick Walsh and Matt Reber are the only two Dartmouth players on scoring streaks right now. They've each recorded a point in the Big Green's last two games.

SHOOTING OUT THE LIGHTS
Dartmouth has outshot all but seven of its opponents already this season with 40 or more shots coming against Harvard (twice), Colgate, St. Lawrence and Brown.

OPPONENT SHOOTERS
Dartmouth has had just four teams record 40 or more shots on net this season. Princeton had 41, Providence 47, Vermont 40 and Northeastern had 42.

OFFENSIVE DEFENSE
Defenseman Evan Stephens has been Dartmouth's top scoring blueliner for the past two seasons. Stephens has already racked up nine points this season while Peter Boldt has five points, Joe Stejskal and Connor Goggin with three and Jim Gaudet with one.

NICE TO MEET YOU
Mark Goggin has played in the most games of all freshmen this season. He's seen time in 14 games while Dustin Walsh is second with 13 games played, he's missed the last four with an injury. Several of their classmates have seen some considerable time as well as Alex Goodship has played in eight, Jason Bourgea in nine and Mike Keenan in seven. Goalie Charles Corsi has seen time in one game this season.

THE SECOND'S THE BEST
Dartmouth has enjoyed playing the second period this season as the Big Green has scored most of its points in that frame. Dartmouth has potted 54 of its 150 points in the second period alone.

ON THE OTHER HAND
Despite an occasional slow start over the last 12 seasons, Dartmouth has gone 114-113-26 after January 1 during Bob Gaudet's tenure. During that span the Big Green has won the ECAC Regular Season title and an Ivy League title.

WELCOME BACK
With the first goal of the game against Harvard, senior Rob Smith was officially welcomed back. Smith suffered a season-ending injury in 2008-09, just two games into the year.

INJURY UPDATE
Defenseman Mike Keenan has been lost for the season due to an injury he suffered in practice prior to the Providence game on Nov. 27.

COLLEGIATE FIRSTS
Rookies Dustin Walsh and Mark Goggin each collected their first collegiate goals against Colgate on Nov. 7. Walsh scored first in the second period before Goggin's tally tied the game in that same frame. Alex Goodship recorded his first collegiate point with an assist in a win over Harvard on Nov. 29. On Jan. 2, freshman netminder Charles Corsi saw his first action of the season when he came on in the second period against Northeastern.

NOT SPECIAL YET
The offensive side of the special teams game has not been favorable for Dartmouth yet this season. The Big Green has just 11 power play goals in 93 attempts. Dartmouth's opponents have managed 23 power play goals on 99 attempts. The Big Green has held six teams (Princeton, Clarkson, Providence, Yale, Rensselaer, Union) scoreless on the extra-man attempt.

FEEL THE POWER
The power play goal scored against Union on Jan. 23 was Dartmouth's first since Jan. 10.

BIG GREEN BROTHERS
Dartmouth will have three sets of brothers dotting the roster this season. Senior Joe Gaudet welcomed younger brother Jim last year. In 2009-10 older brothers Connor Goggin and Nick Walsh will welcome younger siblings Mark and Dustin.

JODY OH
Last season, goalie Jody O'Neill was named both the Ivy League and the ECAC's Rookie of the year. The first time Dartmouth has had a player earn both honors since Hugh Jessiman in 2003.

EXHIBITION OPENERS
Dartmouth made its first appearance on Thompson Arena ice on Oct. 24 against McGill University in an exhibition. McGill skated away with a 7-4 victory as junior Adam Estoclet potted two goals while freshmen Mike Keenan and Mark Goggin scored the other two.

SEASON OPENERS
Dartmouth opened up the 2009-10 season in the friendly confines of Thompson Arena. Despite scoring the first goal of the game, Harvard came back to take the opening season victory. Dartmouth is now 67-31-3 in home openers and is 31-22-2 when opening up on the road. Under the tutelage of Bob Gaudet, the Big Green has gone 6-7 in the first game of the year.

FIRST IN AWHILE
Dartmouth's win at Harvard on Nov. 29 was the Big Green's first in Cambridge since the 1995-96 season. It's just the fifth time a Coach Gaudet squad has defeated the Crimson.

ALL-TOURNEY
Forward Joe Gaudet was named to the Ledyard National Bank Classic All-Tournament team. It's the first such honor for the senior assistant captain.

CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN
Senior defenseman Peter Boldt is the 2009-10 Big Green captain. He will be the 118th captain in Dartmouth men's hockey history. Classmate Joe Gaudet and junior Scott Fleming will serve as assistant captains.

NHL HOPEFULS
Dartmouth has four players currently on its roster that were drafted by NHL teams in the entry draft. Sophomores Troy Mattila and Joe Stejskal were both taken before coming to Dartmouth while Mark Goggin was drafted in 2008 and Dustin Walsh in 2009.

DARTMOUTH AND THE NHL
Lee Stempniak '05 is currently in his fifth NHL season. Last season he was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs after three-+ seasons with the St. Louis Blues. He recorded his 100th career NHL point on Dec. 22 after posting a six-game point streak from Nov. 30-Dec. 11, notching seven points (4g, 3a) over the span. Tanner Glass '07 began the 2007-08 season with the Rochester Amerks but quickly made his way to the Florida Panthers and played 41 games in the NHL, scoring two points. Glass was traded during the summer to Vancouver and was on the 2009-10 opening day roster for the Canucks. David Jones '08 left school early to sign a contract with Colorado and has been a huge factor for the Avs already this year. Ben Lovejoy '07 played several games last season for the Pittsburgh Penguins and was on the roster when the Pens won the Stanley Cup. Grant Lewis '07 also saw some time in 2008-09 with the Atlanta Thrashers. T.J. Galiardi signed early and is on the same roster as fellow Big Green forward David Jones. J.T. Wyman recently got into the act with his first game with the “Big Club” on Dec. 22 at Boston. Nick Johnson played his first game for Pittsburgh on Jan. 21.

NHL PIPELINE
Four former Big Green players began the 2009-10 NHL season on one of the league's 30 rosters. While Dartmouth has nine total that are currently in the NHL system.

DARTMOUTH'S NHLers
Nick Johnson earned his first NHL goal on Jan. 21 for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Since 2007, the Big Green has had seven players play in the NHL.
