WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Senior left-hander Robert Young became the first Dartmouth pitcher to strike out at least 10 batters in a game in nearly five years as the Big Green got their spring trip to Florida started off on the right foot with a 10-5 victory over Bucknell on Wednesday afternoon at Chain of Lakes Park. Sophomore Jake Carlson and freshman Ennis Coble each hit their first collegiate home runs and junior Jason Brooks drove in four runs to back Young and help Dartmouth even its record at 2-2 on the season.
David Duffet went 3-for-4 with a triple and a home run to lead Bucknell (8-7), which had a three-game winning streak snapped.
Young (1-0) had his second quality start of the year in as many starts, yielding three runs on five hits in six innings of work while fanning his career-high 10 batters. He struck out at least one batter in each frame, punching out two in each of the first, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. In one stretch, he struck out six of seven that came to plate. The last Big Green hurler with 10 whiffs in a game was Josh Faiola, who pitched a nine-inning complete game to get his 10 strikeouts, on April 24, 2005 against Yale.
Bucknell got on the board first, however, when Duffett cranked his first home run of the year in the second inning. In the bottom half, the Big Green scored twice — both with two gone — to take a one-run lead. Senior Brett Gardner beat out a ball to third for a single before Brooks legged out an RBI triple to tie the game. It appeared Bison starter Russell Seidell would escape without further damage, but a grounder to short was thrown away, allowing junior Brandon Parks to reach and Brooks to score.
In the third, Bucknell bounced back with a pair of doubles by Ben Allen and Scott Reed, tying the game at two. Then with men on first and third and two down, Reed and Andrew Brouse pulled off a double steal for a 3-2 Bucknell lead.
Again Dartmouth responded, this time with a four-spot to chase Seidell from the mound. Carlson led off the frame with his home run to left-center, immediately knotting the score at three. Coble singled, but was picked off trying to steal second, and Seidell got the second out on a ground ball. The Big Green dug in with two outs, ripping off five straight hits, beginning with a single from senior Jim Wren. Junior Jeff Onstott doubled him home, then came around to score on a Gardner double. Brooks recorded his second RBI of the game by finding the hole between short and third, sending Gardner sprinting for the plate. Parks greeted reliever Alex Cillo with a booming double to center, but Cillo got a fly to center to end the outburst.
Young found his groove starting in the fourth, and Coble drove a pitch over the wall in center in the bottom of the fourth to put the Green up by a 7-3 count. Cillo also calmed down after the long ball, retiring the next seven batters, four on strikes.
Sophomore Cole Sulser relieved Young to start the seventh and promptly surrendered back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners with nobody out. But after a sacrifice fly, he ended the inning with a strikeout and fly to center, but Bucknell was back within three at 7-4.
Once again, Dartmouth answered immediately as Coble singled to start the bottom of the seventh for his third hit on the day. He scooted over to third when a pickoff attempt was wild, and Wren singled him home with one gone. Onstott sent Wren to third with a knock, and Brooks came through again with two outs, delivering a two-run single for a 10-4 Big Green advantage.
Bucknell tacked on a run in the ninth on a Duffett triple and a Scott Glass sacrifice fly.
Both Coble and Brooks were 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the 18-hit attack. Everyone in the starting lineup had at least one safety, with five stroking two. Sulser picked up his first collegiate save by tossing the final three innings, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out four.
Dartmouth will be back in action for its second of 11 games on the spring trip in Florida tomorrow morning against Akron at 11 a.m.
