WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Akron cranked five home runs and banged out 26 hits to rally from an early 5-0 hole and defeat the Dartmouth Big Green at Chain of Lakes Park on Thursday, 25-10. Kevin Haas went 5-for-7 and scored four times while Jake Plata slammed a pair of long balls — one a grand slam — and drove in six to send the Zips (10-6) to their seventh straight victory. Dartmouth (2-3) got four RBIs from junior Jason Brooks for the second straight day as he went 3-for-5 with a double and his first home run of the season.
After scoring two runs in the bottom half of the first to counter the five spot the Big Green put on the board, the Zips scored twice in the fourth, five times in the fifth, and four in each of the sixth and seventh innings before capping off the day with eight runs in the eighth. The 25 runs are the most for a Dartmouth opponent since before head coach Bob Whalen became head coach before the 1990 season.
In addition to Haas' five hits and Platt's two four-baggers with six RBIs, Brandon White was 4-for-6 with a double, homer, three runs and three RBIs, Sam Trecaso had a single, double, homer, three runs and 5 RBIs and Brian Kordal was 3-for-5 with a homer, three runs and four RBIs.
Joining Brooks with three hits for the Green were senior Jim Wren and freshman Zack Bellenger, while junior Jeff Onstott drove in two runs. Senior Ezra Josephson contributed a two-run homer in the ninth to fittingly cap off the slugfest.
Dartmouth jumped all over Zip starter Zach Yike in the first, putting five runs on the board. Rookie Ennis Coble was hit by a pitch with one out and went to third on a single by sophomore Joe Sclafani. Wren punched a ball through the right side of the infield to bring home Coble with the first run, and after a walk to Onstott, Yike got the second out on strikes. But Brooks came through with a bases-clearing double for three RBIs, and Bellenger followed with an RBI single to right to complete the scoring in the frame.
In the bottom half, Akron started its comeback as Plata launched a two-run homer, scoring Haas who had led off with a single.
Brooks got one of those runs back in the third with an opposite-field blast over the wall in right for his first home run of the season.
Meanwhile, senior Ben Murray (0-2) settled in after allowing that first-inning homer, retiring 10 straight batters before running into trouble in the fourth. With two gone, Kordal and White singled before Sam Watkins hit a ball in the left-center gap for a two-run triple, cutting the deficit to two at 6-4.
The Zips took the lead in the fifth as the first three hitters reached on a hit by pitch and a pair of singles. Plata wasted no time at the plate, yanking the first pitch out to right for a grand slam and an 8-6 lead. Three batters later, White also homered, his second of the year, to put Akron up by three.
Reliever Jarod Turocy made his first appearance of the year on the mound to start the sixth and immediately ran into trouble. Coble was hit by a pitch for the third time in the contest, and Sclafani and Wren both singled to load the bases. But Turocy wiggled out of the jam with just one run scoring on an Onstott sacrifice fly to left.
Akron put the game out of reach with four runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Kyle Hallett and White highlighted the sixth with run-scoring doubles, while White capped the seventh with a two-run bomb.
Onstott stroked an RBI single in the eighth, but the Zips tacked on eight runs of their own in the frame on seven hits, three walks and a hit batter, the big blow a three-run jack off the bat of Trecaso.
Danny Fawcett (1-0) was credited with the victory for tossing a scoreless fifth in relief of Yike.
Dartmouth plays again tomorrow against Long Island University at 5 p.m.
