WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Sophomores Jake Carlson and David Turnbull each had four hits while freshman Ennis Coble drove in four runs to back the 11-strikeout performance of sophomore Kyle Hendricks as Dartmouth trounced Long Island, 14-2, at Chain of Lakes Park on Friday. The Big Green stroked 18 hits for the third straight game and scored 14 unanswered runs to even their record to 3-3 on the young season, while the Blackbirds lost their 10th straight game in falling to 1-11 on the year.

With his career-high 11 strikeouts, Hendricks (1-1) became the second Dartmouth pitcher in the last three games to fan at least 10 batters, nearly five years since the last time a Big Green pitcher accomplished the feat. The right-hander allowed solitary runs in the first and second — the latter unearned — from six hits, a walk and a hit batter. That hit batsman came to start the fifth before Hendricks finished his six frames with a flourish, striking out the next five hitters then getting the final out of the sixth on a routine fly to center.

Carlson and Turnbull both had two singles and two doubles, with Carlson scoring three runs and driving in two from his lead-off spot, and Turnbull crossing the plate twice and driving in another from the nine-hole in the lineup. A two-run single and two-run double accounted for Coble's four RBIs, and both sophomore Joe Sclafani and junior Jeff Onstott had a single and triple with three RBIs.

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the second, freshman Zack Bellenger doubled to the gap in right-center with one out. Junior Jason Brooks hit a fly to left-center that was dropped for a two-base error, sending Bellenger to third before junior Brandon Parks walked and Turnbull beat out an infield hit to score Dartmouth's first run of the game. Carlson drove in another run with a single to left, but in his hustle to make it to second base, got Turnbull hung up between second and third for the second out. Coble's two-run single broke the deadlock, however, making it a 4-2 game after two innings.

The Big Green put four more runs on the board in the fourth, knocking Matt McCormick (0-2) from the mound. Turnbull led off with a double and advanced to third when Carlson beat out a bunt for a base hit. After Coble was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Sclafani drew a walk to allow Turnbull to trot across the plate. Matt Owens replaced McCormick and got the first out on a force at second, but Carlson was able to score on the play. Onstott then ripped a ball to center to score two more but was thrown out at the plate trying to stretch it into an inside-the-park home run.

In the fifth, Dartmouth laid to rest any doubt about the outcome with five more tallies. Parks singled with one gone, Turnbull doubled him to third and Carlson plated him with a double of his own. A third straight double, this time off the bat of Coble, sent both Turnbull and Carlson home for an 11-2 advantage. Owens departed the game in favor of Joe Murphy and promptly surrendered Sclafani's RBI triple down the right-field line. With two outs, Onstott hustled down the line on a grounder to short to beat it out and get an RBI single, making it 13-2.

The Green tacked on their final run in the sixth, loading the bases with one down before Sclafani lofted a sacrifice fly to center.

Freshman Michael Johnson shut down the Blackbirds in the seventh and eighth innings on a solitary hit with one strikeout, while junior Ryan Smith tossed a scoreless ninth to close out the game.

Dartmouth plays its fourth game in as many days tomorrow at noon when it takes on the Bradley Braves at noon in Babson, Fla.
