Sarah Howald '96 Named Head Coach of Canadian Women's U-18 Team

HANOVER, N.H. - Former Big Green standout Sarah Howald '96 has been announced as the new head coach of Hockey Canada's National Women's Under-18 Team.

As head coach of Canada's National Women's Under-18 Team, Howald will be the head coach of one of Canada's national teams for the second time in three seasons in 2010-11, having led Canada's National Women's Under-22 Team during the 2008-09 season, winning a silver medal at the 2009 MLP Cup in Ravensburg, Germany.

She spent the 2007-08 season as an assistant coach with Canada's National Women's Under-22 Team, and served as the team's video coach during the 2006-07 season, winning gold at the Air Canada Cup in Ravensburg, Germany in both seasons. Howald has been the head coach of the University of Regina women's hockey team for each of its 12 seasons, leading the team to a Canada West championship and a silver medal at the CIS championship in 2001, and was head coach of Team Saskatchewan at the November 2005 National Women's Under-18 Championship.

Howald will be Canada's head coach for a three-game series against the United States from August 18-21 in Lake Placid, N.Y., and will also lead the team in defense of its 2010 gold medal at the 2011 IIHF World Women's Under-18 Championship next spring in Sweden.

During her Dartmouth career, Howald played under the most successful women's hockey coach for the Big Green in George Crowe. She won two Ivy League titles in 1991-92 and 1994-95 and was one of three team captains in her final year of 1995-96. Howald ranks 10th overall in career points with 146. Her 75 goals puts her sixth on the all-time list. She led the team in points for two of her four seasons, including a career-high 48 points in 1994-95 and was a two-time leader in goals.
