HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth men's hockey team scored three different types of goals – short-handed, power play, and even strength – as the Big Green (8-5-2, 6-3-1) came away with a 3-1 win over Brown on Saturday night in Thompson Arena. The win helps Dartmouth pick up two valuable points in the ECAC Hockey and Ivy League standings as the Big Green now sits in second both places.
Having both played physical games on Friday evening, Brown and Dartmouth battled back-and-forth during the opening period, playing what was by all accounts a relatively clean 20 minutes.
Each team had chances during the frame, but Dartmouth's James Mello (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Brown's Marco De Filippo stopped 11 shots each to keep the game scoreless at the first break.
The Bears started the second period with 1:46 remaining on a power play and Brown had plenty of opportunities, firing off four shots, but
Mello was there to make the save each time.
The two teams then traded power play chances, which overlapped for 1:18. Neither team scored during its respective 42 second power play, but Adam Estoclet (Orono, Minn.) struck for a short-handed goal at 4:56 to grab a 1-0 lead. Stationed behind the net, Scott Fleming (Plainfield, Ont.) fed Estoclet at the top of the crease and the Big Green senior one-timed it past De Filippo glove-side high for his seventh of the year.
With the team skating four players for the second time of the evening, Jeff Buvinow tied the score at 1-1, beating Mello near side on a shot from the bottom of the right faceoff circle.
Bobby Farnham looked to put Brown ahead in the 16th minute, racing in on a partial breakaway. His momentum carried him into Mello and he ended up with a five-minute charging the goalie. Two Dartmouth penalties and a second on Brown on the same play set up two minutes of four-on-four action, which would be followed by a full three-minute power play for the Big Green.
However, just eight seconds after the penalties, another Brown player was sent to the sin bin, giving the Big Green a four-on-three advantage, which Fleming capitalized on just 25 seconds later to give Dartmouth the lead for good, 2-1.
The first 15 minutes of the third period were relatively quiet on both sides before Dustin Walsh's (Shannonville, Ont.) wrister over the glove of De Filippo with 5:43 left to play gave the Big Green a 3-1 lead.
The two teams took matching minors for hitting after the whistle at 16:01 and DeFilippo was then pulled in favor of the extra attacker for a five-on-four advantage. Twice Matt Lindblad (Winnetka, Ill.) had a chance at the open net but the Bears had consecutive blocked shots to keep the freshman off the score sheet.
DeFilippo matched his career-high with 32 saves, including 18 in the second period, while Mello made 33 for the Big Green. Dartmouth finished with 35 shots to Brown's 34.
The Big Green will be back in action on Tuesday and Saturday in its last two non conference games of the season. On Tuesday, Connecticut comes to Thompson Arena before Dartmouth travels to Manchester, N.H. for a tilt against UNH at the Verizon Wireless Arena. Game time for both is at 7 p.m.
