On the eve of the first road trip, senior Connor Goggin (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) took to his usual spot on the bus. He wore his usual green nylon tracksuit. He watched the usual assortment of movies and ate the usual food served ordered by team equipment manager, Brian Corcoran.
There is nothing unusual about this behavior for Connor. It's not the first time he has stepped on a bus to head out on the road with the Big Green. And the 2011-12 season certainly won't be the last time a Goggin does either.
Connor's younger brother, junior Mark Goggin (Glen Ellyn, Ill.), is also a member of the Dartmouth men's hockey team. He didn't come to Hanover and the College on the Hill to follow his brother, but, much like what Connor did, to continue a Goggin family tradition that has now spanned three generations.
The Goggin parents met while attending Dartmouth in the early 1980s. Mark, a member of the Big Green hockey team from 1981-84, would meet his future wife Sally, a former field hockey player and member of the JV women's basketball team, while both were students. Two decades later and their first son would follow in their footsteps.
"We have a big family line at Dartmouth. We came once as a family for my parents' 15-year reunion. It was funny because Matt Lindblad's dad was in the same class that year," Connor remarked. "As a kid, I never really gave too much thought to coming here. I was a late bloomer hockey-wise, so I never had too many realistic thoughts about playing at Dartmouth or any other Division I school.
"When it came time to make my decision, my parents stepped back and let me decide where I was going to go and where I felt I fit best."
A year later, Mark joined Connor.
"It's been awesome and I love having my brother here. We love playing together and being around each other," Connor said. "We were together at Choate before this and it's been a blast."
The current duo of Goggins is the third generation at Dartmouth after their grandfather, Daniel, also donned the Big Green sweater from 1953-57.
Now a senior, Connor is on the top defensive pairing and wears the 'A' on his chest as an alternate captain. A leader both on and off the ice, he is one of the best players on the team as well. Although he may not see it like that.
"We have 10 seniors, and everyone leads by example. We are
really close and it doesn't matter who is wearing the letters because we have a
mature senior class. Everyone could be wearing the 'A' or the 'C' and that
really shows through everyday with the work ethic seen out on the ice."
Though he may not garner the individual recognition as others
on his team or from around the league, many will say that Goggin is one of the
most respected players in ECAC Hockey.
His goal against Quinnipiac in the conference opener with 1:29 left in the game
broke a 4-4 tie and capped off a wild game. Connor's game winner was the final
goal of the third period, but the first Dartmouth tally of the third by Mark at
8:24 tied the game and set up the elder Goggin for the last-minute heroics.
Thanksgiving is a time to spend with family and friends. Each and every game is like that for Connor.
Few get an opportunity to have a college experience like this one and you can bet that as the season continues to grind along Goggin will try to savor every moment as it comes.
"It's come and gone as fast as people says it will. It's
bittersweet, that's for sure."
