HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth men's hockey team is heading to Atlantic City, N.J. to take on Cornell in the ECAC Hockey semifinals. The Big Green advanced to the ECAC Championship series after taking two out of three games against Harvard last weekend. Dartmouth and Cornell will square off on Friday, March 18 at 7:30 p.m. at Boardwalk Hall. Both semifinals as well as the Championship game can be seen live on CBS College Sports channel.
The ECAC has entered into an agreement with CBS College Sports for Championship weekend. Both semifinal games as well as the championship game will be shown on the network. The games can be seen in the Upper Valley on Comcast channel 175, Dish Network 152 and DIRECTV channel 613.
Dartmouth came out of its best-of-three series with Harvard in the quarterfinals by winning the second and third games. The Crimson took the first matchup by a score of 3-2 but the Big Green battled back in the second game with a 2-1 overtime victory to force a deciding game three. In the third and final contest, Harvard took an early lead before Dartmouth tied things up. In the third period, the Crimson again went on top before Matt Lindblad (Winnetka, Ill.) and Evan Stephens (Bessemer, Mich.) recorded the game-tying and go-ahead goals to help the Big Green win, 4-3.
Cornell advanced to the ECAC Hockey Championship winning the first and third games in its series with Quinnipiac. Heading into the month of February the Big Red had won or tied seven of its eight games during the beginning of 2011. Since that time, Cornell has won six of its last 11.
Two sophomores and three seniors are the top scorers for the Big Red with Greg Miller, Joe Devin and Tyler Roeszler each scoring more then 20 points this year. In net, Andy Iles and Mike Garman have each played in 17 games with Iles holding a slight edge in goals against average (2.26) and save percentage (.921). Against Dartmouth this season, Nick D'Agostino, Roeszler and Devin each recorded two points while four others had a point.
On Jan. 28, Rob Smith (Brooks, Alta.) tallied the first goal of the game for the Big Green but Cornell bounced back and scored the next two to take the 2-1 lead midway through the third period. Connor Goggin (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) used his first goal of the season to help Dartmouth tie the contest and end the game knotted, 2-2.
On Feb. 19, Nick Walsh (Shannonville, Ont.) scored early in the second period to break a scoreless tie but the Big Red evened the score late in the frame and eventually took the lead early in the third period. Adam Estoclet's (Orono, Minn.) unassisted goal with five minutes left in regulation tied the game again but it was Roeszler that potted the game winner for Cornell, 1:21 into the overtime frame.
This will be the eighth time Dartmouth has made it to the ECAC Hockey Championship weekend. The Big Green has never made it out of the semifinal round. Dartmouth has met up with Cornell twice in the ECAC playoffs. The Big Green lost to the Big Red in the championship game in 1979-80 and also in the first round in 2007-08. The Big Green has only seen Yale in the quarterfinals when Dartmouth defeated the Elis in 2005-06. The Big Green has played Colgate the most in the playoffs as the two have met up nine times with Dartmouth holding a 6-3 advantage.
