WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Sophomore catcher
Chris O'Dowd extended his hitting streak to 13 with two of Dartmouth's nine hits, but the Big Green could not hold off Indiana on Saturday afternoon at Chain of Lakes Park in a 10-7 defeat. Alex Dickerson smacked a pair of homers to lead the Hoosiers (12-7) to the victory, while Dartmouth (3-3) had its three-game win streak snapped.
Dickerson belted a solo shot to greet reliever
Dan Ternowchek (0-1) at the start of the fifth to break a 5-5 tie, then capped the day's scoring with another solo blast in the eighth. He also added a single to his day to contribute three hits to the 11-hit attack of the Hoosiers.
For the Big Green, rookie
Jeff Keller delivered two knocks, including a three-run double in the third inning, to pace the offense. Joining O'Dowd and Keller with two hits was junior
Joe Sclafani, while senior
Jeff Onstott scored three of Dartmouth's seven runs.
Indiana touched freshman Big Green starter
Mitch Horacek for three runs in the second on a two-run single off the bat of Dylan Swift and an RBI single Dustin DeMuth punched through the right side.
In the top of the third, the Big Green answered with four runs. Hoosier starter Chad Martin retired the first two hitters before an infield hit and a walk put two men on base. It appeared he had escaped the inning when Onstott hit a grounder to second, but the throw was wild, allowing the first run to score. Keller followed with a booming double to center field, clearing the bases and putting the Green on top, 4-3.
Horacek got into trouble again in the fourth when he walked the first two Hoosiers. A sacrifice bunt set up a two-run double by Michael Basil, putting Indiana in the lead again, 5-4.
Again Dartmouth responded right away, tying the game in the fifth with the help of another error. A one-out walk and a fumbled grounder put runners on first and second. Martin retired Keller this time on a long fly to center, but it was the last batter he would face. Matt Igel came on and promptly walked the first batter he faced, loading the bases, before a passed ball allowed the tying run to scamper across the plate.
Dickerson's four-bagger in the bottom half put Indiana in the lead for good, and the Hoosiers tacked on one more with a single, stolen base, and a Jerrud Sabourin single.
A double and a pair of singles in the Hoosier half of the sixth led to two more runs and a four-run lead at 9-5. Dartmouth got one back in the each of the seventh and eighth innings on RBI doubles by sophomore
Ennis Coble and O'Dowd. After Dickerson tagged his second long ball of the day in the eighth, the Big Green went down in order in the ninth to end the game.
Reliever Joey DeNato (2-1) picked up the win for Indiana, hurling 1.1 scoreless innings, while Ryan Halstead earned his fourth save with a perfect ninth.
Dartmouth has two games on the docket tomorrow in Winter Haven, first playing Long Island at 11 a.m., then Northwestern at 3 p.m.
